Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

This is an exciting time to join the Community and Mental Health Division as it continues to grow, the division is currently made up of approximately 1000 staff who work together with the overall aim of improving patient care and experience both in the hospital setting and out in the community. Following the expansion of the division, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, dedicated, and passionate Senior Nurse or Allied Health Professional to join our divisional education team as a Practice Educator.

This role will provide support, supervision, and educational support across the Community CAMHS teams and Gender Identity Service. They will also work closely with the wider divisional educational team to develop and deliver a robust education strategy.

Experience of working within CAMHS is desirable but not essential as the post holder will be well supported by the senior clinical and education teams.

The Practice Educator will promote a culture of continuous improvement within all areas of the division/organisation to ensure best practice is achieved in the delivery of high-quality patient care for children, young people and their families.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the role will include, 

  • Ensuring good, safe and effective education is in place for all staff groups within these teams, also monitoring compliance with mandatory training.
  • Developing and maintaining staff knowledge and skills in order to ensure that all staff employed within the division are 'fit for purpose and practice'.
  • Assisting in developing and implementing the division educational strategy for both registered and unregistered staff.
  • Promoting educational partnerships with other education colleagues and other relevant agencies

This post will primarily be based at the main hospital site but will require activity at other Trust sites and in the community. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main duties and Responsibilities

 Leadership 

 Contribute to the writing of operational policies, recommendations for practice and the implementation of divisional and local initiatives.

·       Collaborate with the wider division and trust education teams, Matrons and Service Leads to ensure the divisional educational needs are addressed.

·       Maintain and sustain the vision and objectives of staff development, education and support until they are firmly embedded into the culture and values of the division.

Identify clear objectives, goals and processes for education and development and to communicate these effectively to others in the work team.

·       Act as clinical expert and role model leading by example best practice and demonstrating professionalism within clinical practice.

·       Ensure adherence to trust and local policies, guidelines, and Standard Operating Producers throughout the division. 

·       Participate in the performance management of staff when necessary.

·       Support the senior staff throughout the division to undertake appraisals as part of the PDR process as and when required.

·       Be familiar with HR policies and procedures as they apply to ensuring staff comply with mandatory training and competence to practice.

·       Network and share best practice at local, regional and national level

·       Maintain clinical credibility and visibility by working alongside staff when and where it is appropriate to the role.

·       Utilise information from appraisal process to assist with the co-ordination of the ward training needs analysis.

 Education, Training and Development

Collaborate with divisional Matrons and Service leads to implement local identified education strategies.

·       Maintain records of education and training provided and records of attendees.

·       Facilitate staff orientation, training, education and practice development programmes with equitable access and support for all levels of staff.

·       Provide support to unit supervisors and those staff undertaking external courses and training.

·       Promote and actively participate in teaching of all grades and disciplines of staff throughout the division and wider trust.

·       Encourage staff to be innovative in the development of patient care using evidence-based practice and patient focused models.

·       Collaborate with divisional Matrons and Service Leads to facilitate full compliance with mandatory training and appraisals

·       Produce an annual report on training, educational achievements made and make recommendations for the future education strategies.

·       Work with both the pre and post registration workforce and the unregistered workforce to present complex and sensitive educational material to both small and large groups.

·       Liaise with other staff groups to develop and deliver multi professional clinical education.

Collate accurate education and training records in line with Trust Targets.

·       To encourage and foster a culture that supports ‘lessons learned’ from adverse events and to provide relevant education and training to address any education gaps.

·       Support the local, divisional and trust wide recruitment processes and induction and preceptorship programmes.

·       Collaborate with the divisional Matrons and Service Leads to evaluate external educational modules in relation to cost effectiveness.

Responsibility for research and development

Collaborate with the Research Nurse team to develop and support a programme of nursing research.

·       Undertake clinical audit utilising appropriate audit and research tools.

·       Disseminate audit and research findings and implement change as necessary.

 

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Registered RMN/LD Nurse Or a registered Childrens Nurse or Allied health Professional with additional training and experience within the field of Mental Health and/or Learning disability.
  • Teaching Qualification or willing to work towards
  • Substantial post registration clinical, leadership and managerial experience
  • Evidence of appropriate continuing professional development
  • Evidence of working autonomously and as part of a team
  • Proven to evaluate safely their own clinical practice
  • Understanding and knowledge of policy developments related to the delivery of care in a paediatric setting
  • Knowledge of strategic issues facing the wider NHS
  • Knowledge of national standards that inform practice (e.g. National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines etc.)
  • Evidence of working with learners in practice.
  • Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of professional and leadership training.
  • Post registration qualification in CAMHs or equivalent
  • Demonstrate service development experience & audits
  • Evidence of developing and delivering training in practice
  • Knowledge of professional development issues in CAMHS
  • Experience of presenting information to wider audience
