We are looking for two experienced senior support workers to join  our team at our city-wide, three bed Short Break Service in  Wythenshawe, Manchester. 

 The role will involve providing person-centred care and support to individuals with a known learning disability who have associated complex communication and behaviour difficulties.

The Short Break Service is led by Learning Disability Nurses, alongside a PBS Practitioner and the team of senior support workers to provide short breaks, working closely with wider community team. Manchester Local Care Organisation is a pioneering, new public sector organisation. We're improving care by bringing together NHS community health and mental health services, primary care and social care services in the city.

Main duties of the job

This role involves delivering care and support using person-centred approaches embedded within the PBS Model. Short Break Service is a busy service which supports adults with learning disabilities, who may also have a diagnosis of autism, complex communication and behavioural difficulties. 

Main duties include; providing care and support to individuals accessing the service including personal care and meals. Supporting with community access using public transport or the services vehicle, health monitoring, medication administration and managing finances. Senior Support Workers have link worker responsibilities and involved in the development of care plans and risk assessments and activity planning.

Senior support workers must be over 21 years old and hold a valid UK driving license as the service provides transport using a large (manual) nine-seater vehicle. 

This role includes link-working alongside the named nurse, liaising with members of the wider MDT and families to develop care plans and increase outcomes for this person.

Shift patterns include days and nights, covering a 24 hour service, seven days a week inclusive of sleep in and waking nights as per rota. 

Ability to work unsupervised and without direct managerial input. Lone working may be required. 

Training is provided in Physical Intervention and Breakaway,

Person specification

Full UK Driving Licence

Essential criteria
  • Over 21 years old. Full Driving Licence/ ability to drive manual and automatic vehicle up to nine seater vehicle/ minibus
  • Previous experience working with adults with learning disability and autism, with complex needs
  • Level 3 NQV in Care, Care Certificate or equivalent qualification in care, learning disabilities and autism.
  • Understanding and experience of working with adults who present with behaviours of concern
  • Ability to complete record keeping, both electronically and written
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the PBS Model. Previous experience of delivering the PBS Model
  • Previous experience of working in a service supporting adults in a specialised behaviour setting
  • Experience and understanding of alternative communication tools and strategies
  • Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
