Band 5 Mental Health Staff Nurse - Acute Inpatient Wards

We have vacancies on our Male acute ward which is fact paced and a true learning experience. 

Penn Hospital welcomes colleagues who are encouraging, proactive, inclusive and caring environment. We have a desire to perform at a high level, ensuring both our patients and colleagues are supported and respected when with us here. We are currently welcoming band 5 staff nurses to join our teams on our male acute ward. 

Brook is a 20-bed male acute admission ward based in Penn, Wolverhampton. We help those who are experiencing an acute episode in their mental health and provide short focused care that is designed to get them back to their home as soon as possible. 

We are looking for nurses who can work at a fast pace and are able to balance a number of tasks at any one time. 
Our patient group can be demanding and challenging but also really rewarding.  There is a strong senior nurse team, who are there to help and support with every aspect of ward life. You will be confident with electronic systems and able to maintain quality records whilst also ensuring you are providing quality care. You will be expected to take part in MDTs, tribunals and be primary nurse, You will liaise with community partners and peers, social workers, care commissioners and family.

Main duties of the job

Principal Accountabilities

To assess patients well being and related needs, raising health concerns both physical and psychological to the teams. 

To plan, deliver and evaluate programs of care, working collaboratively the patient whenever possible. 

To monitor the well being of patients and contribute to protecting individuals whose health and well being is at risk in accordance with local policies eg observation policy, risk management policy.

To establish and maintain effective communication with the multi disciplinary team, service users and carers, about programs of care and routine and daily activities.

To maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the data protection act and professional code of conduct.

To involve service users, carers and relatives wherever feasible throughout episodes of care, offering choices at every opportunity.

Ensuring support workers are completing the ward tasks and are completing observations in line with expectations and policy.

Helping drive development and change to support care of the patients on the ward.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To contribute to quality improvement initiatives, e.g. clinical audit, triangle  of care.

To take an active part in developing knowledge ideas and to support evidence based practice.

To regularly take charge of the ward, taking responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of deputy/ward manager.

To delegate and supervise the work of junior team members as appropriate to level of ability.

To contribute to the development of junior members of staff and students, promoting an environment conducive to learning.

To provide the support workers with supervision. 

To participate in regular management and supervision from ward manager/deputy ward manager.

To participate in regular individual performance reviews and development conversations about your goals and career aims.

To attend training courses that are mandatory, indicated in personal development plans or required by the needs of the service.

To work flexible shifts including Nights, Weekends and Bank Holidays in accordance with service needs.
