Job overview

Children's Assessment Unit and Ward E37  within Nottingham Children's Hospital.

The Children's Assessment Unit is a dynamic ward area. You will have the opportunity to work across two areas gaining a plethora of skills in assessing and treating the deteriorating patient.

You must be an RSCN or RN Child qualified nurse with substantial experience of working in a Children's Hospital setting as a Band 5 or Band 6 nurse.

You must be able to lead a team, demonstrating excellent organisational and clinical skills.

You will be expected to co-ordinate care on the ward and deputise and support the Ward Managers. We are committed to supporting you and offer various professional development opportunities to enhance your acute medical nursing skills and knowledge. 

 

Main duties of the job

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Managers, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings. In collaboration with the Ward Managers, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient process and the pathway of care. Support the Ward Managers in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust’s requirements to improve practice. Being a point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff acting as a resource for problems, needs and able to clearly present the patient’s view to others. Support the Ward Managers in ensuring the development and on-going management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff cover.

This post is essential to safe and effective running of the ward area as the role entails delivery of direct patient care as well as ensuring that consistently safe and effective care is delivered to patients and their families; this incorporates the provision of emotional support. In addition, this role provides leadership and management support to the Ward Managers and team to ensure safe, effective running of the ward on a daily basis.

The appropriate candidate would need experience of managing the ward on a daily basis (in charge of shifts regularly).

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate basic IT skills

Training and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Current level one NMC registration RN (Child) or RSCN
  • Proven management experience
  • Degree or working towards a degree
  • Completed IV and CVL competency packages
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma or working towards a degree
  • A Degree in Children's Nursing

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care
  • Ability to identify own learning needs
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the deputy sister/charge nurse role
  • Able to respond to problem situations and to ensure that effective interventions are put in place
