Job overview

We are seeking a Band 4 Sleep Nurse Associate to join our team within the Great Western Hospital on a full time basis.

You will be required to work across three site, GWH, West Swindon and Moredon Medical Centre.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to develop your clinical skills and knowledge within the Sleep Service.

The Sleep Nurse Associate will work under the direction of the Sleep Specialist Nurses, providing specialist nursing care, support, education and advice to patients, their carer and other health care professionals regarding management of their condition.

Main duties of the job

1. With oversight prepare and set up new patients on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This involves patient assessment, explanation of Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and CPAP therapy, mask fitting, trial of CPAP equipment and downloading compliance data.

2. With oversight prepare and assist in the setup of new patients up on Non-invasive ventilation, this also includes explanation into therapy, mask fitting and trial of NIV equipment and downloading Compliance data and taking appropriate action as necessary.

3. To deal with clinical queries from new and long-term CPAP and NIV users over the telephone and by email.

4. To provide Home sleep studies and oximetry on an outpatient basis.

5. To Ensure simple fault remedy, cleaning, and maintenance of recording equipment within the service.

6. To Download home sleep monitoring equipment and ensure cleaned and ready for next patient.

7. To be able to prepare and set up the sleep recording equipment in the inpatient sleep room.

8. To attend and assist in sleep reporting sessions with the consultant in the absence of the band 6 or 7.

9. Assess patient’s compliance with treatment and utilise techniques to improve their compliance thus maximising effectiveness of therapy.

10. Maintaining patient records and data bases.

11. Provide professional and specialist Knowledge, advice, and training to medical and nursing staff where appropriate on management of patients requiring CPAP or Non-invasive ventilation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Nursing Associate Foundation Degree qualification,
  • • Registered Nursing associate on the NMC register

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional developemnet
  • Experience of working in Respiratory medicine or acute ward
  • Working as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to function as an effective team member
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a sleep clinic
  • Experience of working in a sleep clinic
  • Managing patients with problems (mask and machine)
