Specialist Perinatal Infant Mental Health Midwife

This is a key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and their families with mental health problems in pregnancy and the postnatal period.  You will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which you will use to manage, develop, and lead care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs. You will be responsible for providing extra support and care to some pregnant women with more severe mental health problems, in partnership with their own midwife and the specialist perinatal mental health team. Working with partner organisations to ensure women receive appropriate support during pregnancy and beyond. Identifying and signposting women needing extra support at the earliest opportunity. Supporting staff with the referral processes and offering support with complex cases.  You will work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs working with the specialist midwives for safeguarding; You will have a key role in providing training in maternal mental health, (MMH) The post holder will have key responsibility for the development of care pathways and guidelines and the introduction of frameworks in line with local and national policy.

Take a lead role in supporting, assisting and advising women with, or at risk of, perinatal mental illness and their families to supplement the care provided by their midwives where necessary, for example working with women and their midwives to develop individual care plans, and making referrals to additional specialist support where required.

Work in partnership with professionals, pregnant women and their families in order to support and encourage involvement in their mental health care plan, thus supporting family centred care. In conjunction with other professionals, set, review and maintain standards in relation to mental health practice in line with local and national policy and act as an advocate for women to ensure they get the specialist mental health care they need.

You will still be able to work in a clinical capacity, as required, as a midwife and there will also be some leadership requirements, such as the induction of new staff.  To work collaboratively with midwifery and medical colleagues and other agencies to propose, develop and challenge midwifery practice and policies in a positive and dynamic way. This will include attending appropriate meetings such as reflective sessions /case discussions.
