A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an exceptional nurse/midwife to lead and influence the education and workforce of mental health, learning disability and autism nursing.

As the Clinical Training and Education Senior Specialist for Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism, you will be joining a small but dynamic Nursing and Midwifery Team within the Workforce and Education Directorate in the Southwest region.

The role will help provide expert clinical education, practice and policy advice to health systems, health and social care providers and work closely with Accredited Education Institutes. As an advocate for learners, you will work collaboratively with education providers and operational partners to embed the Safe Learning Environment Charter.

You will have a key role in delivering the regional ambitions of the NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan and the clinical expansion required to secure the future nursing workforce, in order to deliver high quality, safe mental health services now and in the future.

Main duties of the job

In collaboration with regional and national partners, the post holder will be expected to create and deliver an annual plan with objectives that meet the directions of the Long-Term Workforce Plan.

Be responsible for programme delivery for an assigned portfolio of local and shared regional programmes of work.

Have delegated responsibility for representing and presenting NHSE’s position in respect to workforce strategy on behalf of the Head of Programmes to a broad range of external, Board-level stakeholders and stakeholder groups (e.g. ICS/ICB’s, Education providers) with demanding, complex and often competing agendas.

Support the Senior Nurse and the Regional Lead for Nursing and Midwifery to deliver regional objectives and performance and Head of Programmes to build and preserve trusted stakeholder relationships and networks of influence among external, stakeholders in challenging circumstances to support the promotion of NHSE’s strategic objectives.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

Support the Senior Nurse and the Regional Lead for Nursing and Midwifery to deliver regional objectives and performance and Head of Programmes to build and preserve trusted stakeholder relationships and networks of influence among external, stakeholders in challenging circumstances to support the promotion of NHSE’s strategic objectives.

Represent regional workforce transformation priorities and progress against national objectives in NHSE internal national forums for areas of delegated responsibility behalf of the Head of Programmes.

Engage and working closely with, peers across the region and nationally to support organisational learning, innovation, matrix working and the adoption of best practice.

Hold delegated authority to negotiate to gain consensus amongst senior external stakeholders on complex and contentious issues in a political environment relating to local/regional workforce priorities.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Current Registered Nurse/Midwife
  • Masters Level or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist area acquired through postgraduate education or equivalent experience

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of healthcare education and training policy and supporting learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to present effectively to a wide range of audiences including senior stakeholder groups.
Desirable criteria
  • Subject matter expertise relating to Mental Health and or Learning Disability and Autism
  • Recent mental health/ learning disability/ autism clinical practice/ education experience

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Leads by example, role modelling a supportive, inclusive culture, with a focus on quality and ‘can do’ attitude, inclusive management style encouraging engagement and input from all levels within the organisation
  • Skilled communicator able to select from, and utilise, a range of high-level negotiating and influencing strategies appropriate to different audiences and environments.
