Job overview

A vacancy has arisen for an experienced trained chemotherapy nurse to aid in the development, education and  and ongoing support to the Haematology Oncology team nursing team at Airedale General Hospital. 

As the Practice Educator on a busy Haematology Oncology Day Unit (HODU), the successful applicant will play a key role in providing specialist training in chemotherapy, haematology and oncology to existing and newly recruited members of the nursing team.

In conjunction with the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist, and HODU Manager, the  successful applicant will assist with leading the service on the day unit within the hospital, and on the Mobile Cancer Care Units (MCCU) around the surrounding area. 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide support for the nursing team in all aspects of administration of systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT)
  • Implementing local standards and frameworks
  • Assist with clinical audit
  • Identify risks and attend local governance
  • responsible for attending and contributing to the SACT working group
  • Participate in retention, recruitment and appraisal of team members
  • Work closely with the Clinical CNS team and HODU Manager

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The team on the Haematology Oncology Day Unit at Airedale General Hospital icommitted to delivering exceptional patient care and promoting continuous professional development among its staff. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Band 7 Practice Education Facilitators to lead our chemotherapy service alongside the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC qualification
  • First level degree in nursing with extensive clinical experience
  • Oncology/haematology or cancer care qualification Teaching and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Enhanced or Advanced Communication Skills
  • SACT practice supervisor or assessor status
  • Leadership qualification

Skills

Essential criteria
  • UKONS SACT passport competency
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Competent in relevant wider SACT clinical skills e.g. scalp cooling competency
  • Excellent persuasive and influencing skills when dealing with staff across health boundaries
  • Previous experience of formal/informal teaching of patients and staff.
  • Demonstrates a clear vision of the role and service
  • Ability to initiate, sustain and evaluate change
  • Decision making skills
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working at band 6 or above, in oncology and haematology nursing
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge and expertise in the speciality, including possession of relevant competencies'
  • Knowledge of the key professional issues and NMC guidelines relating to professional practice
  • Evidence of being able to work across organisational boundaries
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Adult ( level 1)
  • Supporting learning in Practice or ENB 997/998 Teaching and Assessing Clinical Practice or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • PGCert Education
