Registered Nurse with current registration (mental health / LD/ Adult) appropriate to the job role
Degree/diploma level supplemented by specialist qualification, training, experience, courses to masters level equivalent relevant to the care group
Evidence of post registration training in relevant service area
Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent
Supplementary/Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Module (level 3)
Extensive post qualifying experience in relevant service area
Experience of supervising staff and students
Able to manage a caseload of patients with complex mental health needs
Comprehensive knowledge of interventions specific to service area
Awareness of Trust policies and service specification
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with staff, patients, families, carers and professionals
Able to establish links with other services and professionals
Able to effectively manage risk
To have a good knowledge of service objectives and to understand performance reports and how they relate to team
Able to manage and delegate tasks; participate in service development; able to lead clinical discussions in team; able to undertake audit activity; able to plan staff rotas as needed
To provide supervision for Nursing staff including clinical, and professional; to develop training sessions for staff, students, professionals and agencies; to participate in staff recruitment and selection, absence management and other staff related issues; to understand and manage team dynamics
Able to use IT systems competently
Physically fit to undertake duties related to service area
Able to prioritise workload, plan and organise diary, and manage report writing, attendance at clinical meetings, supervise colleagues, assess patients
Able to manage distressing and emotional situations involving staff and patients, manage and deal with complaints, incidents and SIs
Aware of policies governing area of work, able to travel to other locations county-wide, demonstrate support for values of the Trust, team player, punctual and flexible

Background

Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia: a progressive and complex condition that can be devastating for the whole family. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Every day, Admiral Nurses help families up and down the country to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
