An excellent developmental opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Deputy Ward Manager position on Cedars Ward specialising in functional older adult mental health care  based at Bloxwich Hospital.

This is a fantastic opportunity to continue or develop your management and Leadership skills within Older Adults Mental Health and to support junior staff in delivering, high quality care within our dementia inpatient service. The post holder will provide Leadership for the ward and work in close collaboration with ward manager as part of the leadership and management structures that are in place to ensure high quality care throughout the patient pathway.

Applications are invited from experienced Nurses with relevant experience, to support and lead our service as part of the ward management team. You should be motivated, forward thinking in your approach, and possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills. A degree of flexibility in approach is required along with a willingness to learn whilst working in a potentially challenging environment.

You will be leading and managing a team that has high levels of training compliance, good support systems, and low levels of complaints

* To work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. 
* To demonstrate an ability to engage proactively using effective communication with patients and 
families/carers/significant others. 
* Ability to demonstrate a high level of clinical nursing expertise acting as a role model to others 
and to have an awareness of their own specialist skills. 
* To participate in Mental Health Act assessments and demonstrate an up to date knowledge of 
the roles and responsibilities of the nurse and its application in practice. To demonstrate a good understanding of Mental Capacity Act and implementing Deprivation of 
Liberties Safeguarding referrals. 
* Demonstrates competence, skills and knowledge to effectively work with patients and their 
families/carers/significant others with regards to medicine management. 
* Demonstrate the skills and knowledge essential for developing risk management plans and 
timely review of the risk management plan identifying opportunities for positive risk taking in 
conjunction with the patient, ward team and carer/family/significant other. 
* To support Band 5 staff in their role as named nurse, facilitating responsible care coordination, 
care planning, implementation and clinical assessments. 
* To monitor the well being of patients and contribute to protecting individuals whose health and 
well being is at risk in accordance with local policies e.g. observation policy, risk management 
policy. 
* Ability to assess patient progress on the ward through close working with the ward team. 
* To maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Professional 
Code of Conduct. 
* To maintain clinical records in accordance with local policies. 
* To monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others in own work area as 
identified in local policies. 
* To initiate quality improvement directives such as clinical audits, Essence of Care. 
* To take an active and where necessary a leading part in developing knowledge, ideas and to 
support evidence based practice and have a clear understanding of good practice. 
* To support Band 5 staff in their role as Shift Coordinator and/or Nurse in Charge. 
* To undertake and support team members through processes such as Professional Development 
planning and Clinical Supervision. 
* To contribute to the development of junior members of staff and students promoting an 
environment conducive to learning. 
* Ensure all necessary documentation identified in organizational/local policies and procedures 
are completed by self and others as required. 
* Ensure an open channel of communication/information to the team and other members of the 
multi disciplinary team including active engagement with care coordinators under CPA in order to 
identify appropriate resources to support the patient upon discharge from hospital. 
* Ensure an open channel of communication/information throughout the wider Trust including 
other ward areas, site meetings and support services such as Finance, Employment services. 
* Refer any enquiries out of your sphere of competence to the appropriate channels using line 
manager. 
* Develop nursing practice through the critical appraisal of research, integrating findings where 
appropriate into clinical practice. 
* Support nursing and multi disciplinary research and audit within the Trust. 
* Maintain a professional portfolio and registration for practice. 
* Report and discuss any professional concerns with the Ward Manager. 
* Act as a positive role model when carrying out all aspects of patient care. 
* Be non judgmental and anti discriminatory in your approach to patients and staff despite difficulties 
that may present and promote this ethos within the team. 
* Take time to listen to the patient regarding their concerns, anxieties and needs. 
* To participate in regular individual performance reviews and in the production of a Personal 
Development Plan. 
* To actively engage in reflection on own practice as an ongoing process and through regular clinical 
supervision. 
* To attend mandatory training courses indicated in personal development plans or required by the 
needs of the service. 
* To work rotational shifts including nights, weekends and bank holidays in accordance with service 
need. 
* To participate in cross site Senior Nurse cover including nights, weekends and bank holidays offering 
managerial support to other ward areas. 
* To support the Ward manager in developing effective ward rotas, managing skill mix issues and 
addressing staff shortages where necessary through effective communication with the ward team 
and Bank Nurse service. 
* To effectively negotiate annual leave with team members keeping accurate records in line with Trust 
policies. 
* To negotiate and facilitate mandatory and identified training for team members. 
* To support the Ward Manager in managing staff sickness in an effective and timely manner as per 
Trust policies and maintain accurate records. 
* Demonstrate the commitment to develop the range of skills required to deputise in the absence of 
the Ward Manager. 
* Demonstrate effective time management and the ability to prioritise competing demands. 
* To demonstrate a commitment to work positively with patients and carers who express verbal 
concerns or complaints about the service and attempt early and effective resolution. 
* Demonstrate a comprehensive and working knowledge of the policy and procedural guidance 
following a Serious Untoward Incident (SUI) and the ability to prepare a clear and concise 24 report 
following such incidents. 
* Demonstrates awareness of the major national policy initiatives and their influence on care delivery.
