Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. Job overview

South Warwickshire NHS University Foundation Trust’s Emergency Department is excited to offer a new opportunity to an experienced Registered Children’s Nurse with a keen interest in supporting learners in practice.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Paediatric Clinical Sister / Charge Nurse to support the development of staff within the Emergency Department as a Clinical Learning Lead. 

The role will offer the opportunity to benefit from protected time to ensure training and supervision can be delivered and supported ensuring we provide outstanding clinical practice for children and young people within our department. You will support the development of skills and competencies of registered and non-registered staff within the department.

This will involve assessment, supervision, feedback and work allocation. Working collaboratively with internal and external teams within the trust, your role will have the responsibility for ensuring the area is a positive learning environment and that each learner is assessed and supported within that area to achieve all learning outcomes.

This is a new and exciting post which will ensure an effective learning environment in our department to grow a highly skilled, competent, supported and caring workforce for the future.

Main duties of the job

To work within and ensure continued development of an environment conducive to learning, integrating evidence-based theory & practice within the department.

To provide clinical leadership and establish high quality learning environments through teaching and assessment, supporting all new starters and learners within the department.

To provide teaching and support to all staff who are supervising and assessing all new starters and learners.

To work closely with the practice development team, the apprenticeship team and the learning and development department to support a coordinated approach to education, training and professional development.

To support staff in the development of competence and confidence in the delivery of high standards of care whilst being responsive to the needs of patients, relatives and carers as well as service demands.

To manage time effectively between clinical and educational responsibilities in the ward ensuring a 50/50 split.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Organisational:

1. Ensure all Trust wide and departmental processes, protocols and 
procedures are understood and adhered to by all staff.
2. Ensure strategies are in place to enable the A&E performance targets to be 
met; escalating, as per the Escalation Policy, to the appropriate level when 
needed. Completing breach analysis during each shift.
3. Manage staff sickness ensuring that the department has minimum safe 
staffing levels; escalation to Clinical Nursing Lead if appropriate cover is not 
maintained.
4. Assist in the investigation of complaints/clinical incidents as necessary.
5. Foster good working relationships with other paediatric wards and 
departments within the Trust.
6. Supervise junior staff through a shift, prioritising and delegating as 
appropriate.
7. Manage all resources to the maximum benefit of patients and the service, 
being aware of resource implications specific to the department.
8. Promote effective communication within the nursing team, to patients and carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team and external 
agencies, receive and report sensitive information.
9. Participate in the setting, implementing and monitoring of organisation and local objectives
10. Promote, and participate in, collaborative working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team.
11.Act as a positive role model for other staff.
12.Act as an advocate for patients.
13. Utilise clinical and risk assessment skills to maintain a safe environment.

Clinical:

1. To be competent to assess, plan, delivery and manage episodes of care, 
participating in all aspects of care from arrival through to 
discharge/admission/transfer.
2. To be an effective practitioner and demonstrate the ability to deliver a high 
standard of patient care.
3. Organise the method of care delivery within a clinical area; prioritising, 
allocating and delegating effectively.
4. To identify and act upon situations which may be detrimental to the health 
and wellbeing of patients.
5. Liaise with other agencies and professionals to ensure effective patient 
management and care.
6. Support and guide junior staff in delivering high standards of nursing care.
7. Monitor, maintain and review regularly standards of care in conjunction with 
other members of the multi-disciplinary and safeguarding teams.
8. Maximise opportunities for health promotion and health education.
9. Act as a resource person to others, providing information to junior staff, 
multidisciplinary team members, patients, and relatives.
1O.Initiate and take part in clinical audit.
11.Keep abreast of new developments in paediatric nursing, and specialty 
specific information.
12.Be competent in appropriate areas of role expansion, and support this 
development in others.
13.Be professionally accountable for own actions during working shift.
14.Promote and comply with all NMC professional standards

untoward incidents, accidents and complaints in accordance with Trust 
policies and procedures.
4. Be aware of child protection guidelines together with strategies to safe 
guard vulnerable children. Seek guidance and support form senior staff 
where necessary.
5. Maintain awareness of current nursing practice/research with particular 
reference to own working area, evaluating and disseminating findings.
6. To support and participate in departmental clinical research activities, and 
assist in the implementation of any appropriate research findings.

Health & Safety:

1. Assess and monitor risk in own other practices/settings. Act on the 
findings, thereby ensuring safe delivery of care.
2. In accordance with the Health and Safety at work act comply with the 
Trusts Health and Safety policies and procedures
