This is an exciting opportunity as a Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse for the SDEC unit whereby an individual to be able to further develop skills and work within a skilled fast-paced team. The Unit is a small, busy, and friendly team.
The SDEC unit works in conjunction with Our Virtual Ward service at George Eliot Hospital to look to support our patients and receive the care they may need.
Main duties of the job
- To take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of the nursing team.
- To promote and deliver a high standard of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide an excellent patient experience.
- To work and undertake clinical shifts.
- To work within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognizing one’s own abilities and limitations.
- To facilitate and build team working between nurses and the multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
- To ensure effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives, and colleagues
- To perform a range of nursing skills as per trust policy including
- venepuncture, cannulation, and recording ECGs.
- To participate in all elements of direct patient care including harm prevention.
- To ensure all trust documentation pertaining to patient care and departmental safety are completed to a high standard.
- To practice in line with NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies, recognising own abilities and limitations.
- To promote good working relationships within the nursing teams, providing appropriate advice and support.
- To teach, mentor and supervise students and other junior staff, ensuring a high level of competence.
- To respond to deteriorating patients in a timely manner and taking responsibility for supporting junior staff in such situations.
- To undertake immediate life support as part of trust training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To assist the Head of Nursing/Matron to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff.
- To support the Matron/SDEC Unit Manager to initiate and implement improvements using a systematic approach.
- To ensure staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery, maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.
- Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams.
- To ensure information on the Ward/Department/Clinical area information system is correct and updated regularly as appropriate.
- To deputise for Senior Nurse Practitioner in leading SDEC Team in their absence.
- To assist the Unit Manager/Senior Nurse Practitioners in monitoring and audit of SDEC standards including high impact interventions, KPI and target data.
- To maintain an accurate non-medical prescribing log and attend NMP meetings as per trust policy.

- To co-ordinate SDEC daily, acting as the shift leader.
- To assist the Unit Manager and Senior Nursing Practitioners in maintaining safe staffing levels on the unit by managing and escalating staffing gaps, skill mix and sickness.

The Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit is based across two clinical areas that consists of two clinical areas for its Planned and Unplanned (ED) pathways.
The emergency department (ED) pathway working hours are 08.30-21.00 and our Planned pathway working hours are 08.30-21.00.
This care model, whereby patients presenting at hospital with relevant conditions can be rapidly assessed, diagnosed, and treated without being admitted to a ward, and if clinically safe to do so, will go home with the possibility of continued care through our planned pathway which the unit offers for example blood transfusions or iron infusions.
