Job overview
Ground Floor theatres department at UHCW consists of 5 theatres and 2 treatment rooms, supporting multiple specialties performing highly specialised surgeries. We work closely with main theatres and Theatres at St Cross, Rugby.
We have an exciting opportunity for applications from enthusiastic individuals to work within our busy Theatres and recovery.
We are looking for a Senior Operating Department Practitioner for full time / part time position.
Theatre is a fast-paced environment where a positive attitude, energy and innovation are welcomed. As a team leader/Senior Theatre Practitioner you will be expected to deliver high standards of perioperative care and could support and develop your own skills and facilitate / support and develop the team to provide excellent patient care within the department.
We ask that applicants have a extensive experience as Anaesthetic Practitioner and can demonstrate leadership skills and qualities. You will be expected to lead a team in theatre and at times the department.
Main duties of the job
- Assess, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the peri-operative care of patients using specialist knowledge and skills.
- Acknowledge personal preferences, rights and choice of patients undergoing surgery.
- Maintain health, safety, and the control of infection in clinical work areas in line with Trust policies and procedures.
- Store, prepare and administer prescribed drugs to patients, and monitor the effects of drugs on patients in line with Trust policies.
- Prepare, monitor, and maintain materials and equipment for clinical procedures, take action if found to be faulty.
- Support, monitor and care for patients during clinical procedures.
- Contribute to treating patients during clinical emergencies.
- Receive, transfer and position patients for clinical procedures.
- Continually develop own knowledge by evaluating and reflecting on practice.
- Maintain a professional profile.
- Create a learning environment in theatre.
- Act as an assessor/mentor/preceptor to members of staff.
- Teach others within the theatre area.
- Develop and evaluate learning materials.
- Ensure effective supervision and assessment of students within theatre

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Band 6 practitioners are expected to deputise in the absence of band 7 Clinical lead which involves e-roster work, list planning, stock and implant procurement, absence management and PDR reviews.
Clinical - Core
- Assess, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the peri-operative care of patients using specialist knowledge and skills.
- Acknowledge personal preferences, rights and choice of patients undergoing surgery
- Maintain health, safety and the control of infection in clinical work areas in line with Trust policies and procedures
- Store, prepare and administer prescribed drugs to patients, and monitor the effects of drugs on patients in line with Trust policies
- Prepare, monitor and maintain materials and equipment for clinical procedures, take action if found to be faulty
- Support, monitor and care for patients during clinical procedures
- Contribute to treating patients during clinical emergencies
- Receive, transfer and position patients for clinical procedures
- Maintain accurate & legible records of care.
Clinical - Surgery/Anaesthetics/Recovery
- Assess requirements of the theatre/anaesthetic room/recovery room for the operating list
- Provide all necessary equipment and materials for the list
- Monitor all equipment used, take action if found to be faulty
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of operative procedures/departmental procedures
- Demonstrate budgetary control, ordering and supplying materials required within agreed budgets.
Teamwork
- Communicate effectively with other members of the theatre team and other clinical work areas
- Acknowledge and value people’s roles within the team
- Recognise own and others limitations within the team and take appropriate action
- Provide required resources for anticipated workload and to cover 24 hour emergency rotas
- Manage the theatre team to ensure effective & efficient use of funded theatre time
- Participate in achieving the aims of the department/Trust.
