A position has arisen on Ward 34 for a Band 6 clinical ward sister/charge Nurse .  Previous experience within haematology is essential and the successful applicant must be competent in the delivery of chemotherapy and assessor qualification.

Ward 34 is the Tertiary Centre for Coventry and Warwickshire for treatment of patients with Haematological Malignancies requiring intensive inpatient chemotherapy.

We are an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Centre, Haemophilia Treatment Centre and Haemoglobinopathy Centre.

The ward is configured to provide inpatient, day case and clinic facilities in one place meaning that our immunocompromised patients do not share waiting or day case space with other patients. Office space for medical staff and specialist nurses is integral to the ward, and these senior staff is therefore on hand when needed.

Staff on the ward work together in a dynamic and enthusiastic multidisciplinary team.

The majority of our inpatients are being treated for haematological malignancies or the complications of treatment, but the nursing staff also has expertise in management of other complex patient groups, including bleeding disorder patients and patients with sickle cell anemia. We have expertise in delivery of curative and palliative treatments and often manage our patients throughout their journey, including at the end of life.

All nurses are trained in, or are receiving training in, venepuncture, cannulation, management of tunneled CVCs and delivery of chemotherapy and stem cells.

Ward 34 is a busy ward. We usually build excellent long term relationships with our patients.

As a highly motivated band 6 nurse you will have an excellent opportunity to develop yourself and supporting colleagues ,shift management and performing staff appraisals.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities
As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a pre requisite for this post.

1. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
2. Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team including situations where difficulties in comprehension occur.
3. A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
4. Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited, involving patients and users.
5. Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
6. Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
7. Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
8. Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
9. Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need, referring to a senior member of staff where appropriate e.g. in an unexpected event.
10. Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
11. Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
12. Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
