Job overview

The Clinical Sister in the Elderly Ward is a senior nursing role responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality care to elderly patients. This position involves leading a team of nursing staff and healthcare staff, ensuring the implementation of best practices in geriatric care, compassionate care, enhancing patients' overall experience in the hospital setting.

Ward 20A is a 24 bedded area which is based on 2nd floor of UHCW. We are a care of elderly ward within the medicine group.

This role offers the chance to undertake several extended roles, and we offer excellent training and support for nursing staff to achieve competence in a variety of areas.  Successful applicants will be motivated and keen to develop their nursing skills and knowledge of leadership and management. 

They will have the skills and competence to support their team, ability to make clinical decision take charge on shifts. In addition, you will expected to support the ward manager in the management of the team, patients’ safety and ward performance. 

Main duties of the job

  1. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  2. Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team including situations where difficulties in comprehension occurs.
  3. A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  4. Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented, and evaluated/audited, involving patients and users
  5. Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate for example, sickness and absence, skill mix for shift patterns, complaints

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data available.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need, referring to a senior member of staff where appropriate e.g. in an unexpected event.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected vent.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards. Utilise IT systems to record patient data, for example EPR and have a good understanding of monthly data such as Improving Working Lives (IWL)’s, Monitoring Sickness and Absence.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control always.
  • Undertake Personal Development Review programme (PDR), ensuring nursing staff have annual reviews which are completed in a timely manner and reported accurately to reflect a pro-active approach to the appraisal process.
