UHCW would like to offer you a warm welcome to the University Hospital Coventry Endoscopy team. Our JAG Accredited service provides a range of both diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic procedures to a population of over a million people across Coventry and Rugby.

Its an exciting time to join UHCW as we work through our new Community Diagnostic Centre Programme (CDC), which  provides patients with more convenient access to vital diagnostic procedures with shorter waiting times. As part of the CDC programme a new Endoscopy Unit  opened at the Hospital of St Cross. The includes three fully-equipped Endoscopy procedure rooms and facilities with separate male and female waiting and recovery areas, improving privacy and comfort for patients. This is in addition to the 5 procedure room unit on the Coventry site.

Main duties of the job

As an established Nurse Endoscopist you will work in collaboration with the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments across both our University Hospital, Coventry and Hospital of St Cross, Rugby sites. Main duties of the job will:

  • Manage a caseload of patients, supporting patients their families and clinical staff throughout the diagnostic process
  • Mole model and provide clinical support for junior members of the team
  • Be independently competent in undertaking diagnostic endoscopy (OGD, Flexible sigmoidoscopy and / or Colonoscopy).
  • Be willing to undertake TNE and support the development of this service.
  • Collaborate with the management teams within the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will manage a caseload of patients, supporting patients their families and clinical staff throughout the diagnostic process, and providing clinical support for junior members of the team.

As an established Clinical Endoscopist competent in delivering education, supported with audit and research, the post holder will take personal responsibility for the setting of professional standards and the monitoring of performance against the agreed local and national standards for the Service, in collaboration with the management teams within the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments.

The role involves working across multiple sites.

  1. To be competent in the delivery of endoscopy including OGD, FOS, Colonoscopy.
  2. The promotion of clinical excellence in his / her practice through the implementation of research evidence based care and NICE guidelines.
  3.  Being responsible for the day to day function of their own caseload, assessing, implement ting and directing endoscopy cases. To include liaison with all members of the MDT, patients and their families, and in nurse/non-medical led endoscopy sessions.
  4. Work autonomously as a Clinical endoscopist to deliver a differential diagnostic GI endoscopy service including delivering life-changing diagnoses, initiating treatment, and breaking bad news. The option to develop therapeutic  GI endoscopy could be discussed.
  5. Administer local anaesthetic and IV sedation to patients undergoing endoscopy in accordance with Trust policies and group protocols.
  6. Take endoscopic biopsies and request histopathology reports in order to form an accurate diagnosis.
  7. Establish safe practice in the delivery of a broad range of therapeutic endoscopic procedures including highly complex interventions. Provide accurate endoscopy reports to enable appropriate treatment and care.
  8. Refer patients to other Health care providers to ensure patient care is continued. Including independent referral for radiological intervention such as x-ray, CT and MRI.
  9. The establishment and maintenance of effective collaboration and co-operative relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team, working towards the optimisation of high standards of care in endoscopy.
  10. To work in collaboration with partners across the local system, contributing to and developing system pathways for the benefit of patients referred via GI 2WW pathways.
  11. Provide practical guidelines for the treatment/management of patients including setting of policies and protocols that direct both medical and non-medical practice.
  12. Continue to provide Clinical excellence through his/her practice that remains up-to-date through training and mentorship.
  13. Develop and maintain an appropriate knowledge base of anatomy in order to distinguish between normal and abnormal endoscopy findings.
