Main duties of the job

The Chief Nurse & AHP Officer role is a key member of our Board, providing clinical and strategic leadership in the development of Nursing and AHP standards across our health and care system.  The Chief Nurse & AHP Officer is accountable for all matters, statutory and non-statutory, relating to our nursing, midwifery and AHP workforce, responsible for safeguarding, quality improvement, control and assurance of the ICB.

Working closely with our Chief Medical Officer, they will provide strong and effective clinical leadership as a key member of our Executive team, ensuring that patient safety and the delivery of high-quality care remain central to our strategic direction and decision making. Our future Chief Nurse & AHP Officer will celebrate the richness of our workforce and populations, supporting us to develop and implement our ‘better health and wellbeing for all’ strategy.

Working for our organisation

Our Integrated Care Board (ICB) is the largest in the country. 

The ICB is responsible for ensuring that high quality and safe health services are accessible to all of our communities. It has a wide range of functions, including; promoting integration of health and care services, improving peoples health and well-being, reducing health inequalities.

With a £6.6 billion budget and a workforce of 170,000 people across the North East and North Cumbria. As well as strategic functions, ICB staff also work at place level with local health and wellbeing boards in each of our 14 local authority areas. These teams also work alongside our 67 primary care networks which are groups of local GP practices, social care teams and other community- based area providers.

The ICB works with our Provider Collaborative too, this includes the 11 NHS Foundation Trusts in the region, to deliver our shared priorities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Essential Criteria:

·       Evidence of sustained personal & professional development

·       Registered nurse with post registration qualification, at degree level

·       Current NMC Registration

·       Masters level qualification or equivalent experience

·       Substantial Board level experience as an Executive Director of Nursing (minimum 3 years) with a demonstrable track record of success in a large and complex NHS organisation

·       A proven track record of nursing leadership, driving standards of care and delivering change within an organisation is essential

·       Experience in dealing with the complex field of litigation, regulation & improvement

·       Knowledge and substantial experience of leading the nursing agenda within an NHS organisation

·       Knowledge and experience of leading organisational clinical quality, clinical governance & risk management agendas

·       Demonstrable track record of achievement in quality and patent safety

·       Experience in the management of complex projects

·       Experience of effective partnership and working with internal and external stakeholders

·       Experience of Implementing governance frameworks

  • Masters level qualification or equivalent experience

  • Postgraduate management qualification at Masters level
