Job overview

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Specialist Nurse for Children in Care. This is an exciting post which will be ideal for someone wanting to provide high quality health care services to children in care, manage a team of nurses and coordinate and analyse data to improve the service. 

Main duties of the job

The specialist nurse will provide clinical leadership with regard to the needs of children in care. This will involve direct clinical services as well as offering expert advice and support to a range of professionals from statutory and voluntary agencies, carers and parents involved in the care of children in care. This is to enhance health outcomes for this group of children. 

The role will involve supporting the Named Nurse in managing and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of health care provision to children in care. The service needs to be of high quality and evidence based.

The specialist nurse will provide management supervision of the bank 6 nurses. They will complete clinical supervision and ensure all training is completed. They will be expected to provide senior leadership within NorthTyneside and Northumberland to work closely with the Named Nurse and Doctors for children in care.

Working for our organisation

The children in care health team complete health assessments for over 700 children and young people. The team works closely with Northumberland County  and North Tyneside Councils.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide clinical leadership with regard to the needs of children in care.

To provide both a direct clinical service to looked after children and to provide expert advice and support to a range of professionals from statutory and voluntary agencies, carers and parents involved in the care of Children in care.

To provide a health promotion and advisory role for care leavers to promote an effective and smooth transition into adult hood.

To support the Named Nurse in managing and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of health care provision to Children in care and care leavers.

To have key health worker responsibility for the caseload of Children in care shared with the rest of the team.

To provide services of a high quality that are evidence based and responsive to the needs of Children in care.

To work with key stakeholders, staff employed by the trust and other agencies to improve the health outcomes and life chances for Children in Care.

Develop, deliver and evaluate specialist training with regard to Looked After children, young people and care leavers to NHCFT staff, foster carers, young people, care leavers and staff employed by other agencies.

To provide supervision to staff employed by the trust.

The post holder will be part of and be expected to provide senior leadership within North Tyneside and Northumberland to work closely with the Named Nurse and Doctors for Children in care.

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse with NMC.
  • BSc / BA in subject relevant to role.
  • Teaching / training and assessing qualification;
  • Up to date mentor qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Management / leadership qualification;
  • Sexual health / Family Planning qualification.
