Neonatal Governance Lead

Frimley Health Foundation Trust has two neonatal units one at Frimley Park Hospital and the other at Wexham Park Hospital, both are Local neonatal units with 16 and 17 cots respectively. Both units have of 2 Intensive Care, 3 High Dependency and 12 Special Care cots. The units care for babies over 26+6 weeks gestation and stabilises any baby under that gestation, to be transferred to a tertiary hospital/ NICU.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced neonatal nurse to join our team and develop the role of neonatal governance lead to work across our two units, managing and co-ordinating all aspects of clinical risk, governance and improve 'Badgernet' data quality.


The Neonatal Governance lead will be responsible for contributing to the provision of a first-class service to patients by ensuring the Directorate meets NHS clinical governance objectives and targets. This is a vital role that has a major impact on developing a clinical governance culture and ensuring patient safety.

As the Neonatal Governance Lead the post holder will take responsibility for leading investigations of significant events and serious incidents, producing and monitoring action plans. Providing support and information for staff to learn from incidents, taking into consideration human factors, route cause analysis pathways and assurance that change in practice has been embedded to prevent re-occurrence.

•    Promoting a culture where clinical governance and patient safety are integrated into the care and wellbeing of all patients, staff and families, promoting a culture of participation, openness, and accountability. 

•    Support staff and guide them in the management of incidents and complaints, promoting reflection on practice and disseminating learning.


•    Lead on the implementation and management of change in response to learning from incidents, ensuring that any necessary actions are taken to prevent similar incidents occurring.


•    Ensure the appropriate level of investigation is undertaken in response to incidents, reflecting the severity of incidents.


•    Ensure incident reporting via relevant trust and national governance pathways.


•    Ensure the Trust Neonatal Safety Champion is kept up to date.


•    Report to and participate in, relevant Trust and Network level Governance and Risk meetings.


•    Build professional relationships within the Directorate and across the trust in order to perform a central co-ordinating role in all aspects of clinical governance, including risk management, clinical effectiveness, patient involvement, quality and patient safety, complaints and litigation.

•    Support the Directorate Clinical Governance Committee and liaise with the chair to ensure the agenda as defined by the terms of reference is met in full, and to ensure that terms of reference are regularly reviewed.

•    To contribute to the Governance agenda ensuring that risk management processes across the organisation are integrated in line with the organisation framework and monitor effectiveness. 

•    Facilitate the review and submission of appropriate evidence for CQC outcomes ensuring evidence submitted meets the required standard and provides assurance of compliance. 

•    Support in the provision of peer review of Directorate evidence for CQC outcomes as required.

•    Support the Clinical Governance Leads and ADs to report on key aspects of patient safety and quality, including key performance indicators and benchmarking data, to Trust Board sub committees and other Trust wide groups.

•    Work closely with staff groups to implement and review any new practices/recommendations from local, network and national audits.

•    Act as an expert resource in Clinical Governance by maintaining and developing knowledge of national and local clinical governance initiatives, supporting sharing good practice.

•    Represent the Directorate by attending and participating in regional and national meetings and events relating to clinical governance as required.

•    As part of the Patient Safety Team, provide information and advice regarding risk management issues in order to maintain and develop safe systems within the Trust.

•    To undertake any other duties or responsibilities commensurate with the seniority of this post as agreed with the Deputy Head of Patient Safety

  • NMC Registration with experience in the care of babies, children and young people
  • Educated to master’s level or relevant experience
  • Post registration Qualification in Neonatology
  • Significant post registration neonatal experience
  • Risk Management experience/qualification

Experience
