Our ITU is an 11-15 bedded adult general critical care unit with both planned and unplanned (emergency) admissions.  Our patient group is incredibly diverse, representing the breadth of specialities supported by our intensivist. Opportunities are available for progression, within the department.  Registered Nurses have options for further professional developments.

All successful candidates will benefit from a structured orientation and induction programme run by our established Education team.  Staff will follow an education pathway, which is competency based (using the Critical Care National Competency Framework).  There will also be opportunity to undertake Critical Care course.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for;

  • Planning and delivering effective and high quality nursing care for level 1 - 3 patients within the critical care unit, utilising a patient centred model of practice and all available resources to provide excellence in practice, provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervision and direction of junior nursing staff, healthcare assistants and other learners.
  • Manage care on a day-to-day basis for all patients in the clinical area in the absence of more senior colleagues, utilising knowledge of standards, policies and procedures outlined by the hospital.
  • Assisting in the management of resources and contribute to the corporate agenda.
  • Developing Critical Care knowledge and skills while completing the Band 5 Critical Care development programme. Supervising and mentoring student nurses and unqualified nursing staff.
  • Promoting a quality service using research and evidence-based practice

You will be able;

  • To be professionally accountable and responsible for the nursing care of a group of patients or patient requiring critical care nursing.
  • To be aware of the potential misuse of critical care specific equipment that can cause harm up-to and including death of the patient.
  • To be responsible for the immediate management of critically ill patient  in ICU and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team ensure that patients receive optimum care.
