Paediatric Sister - Paediatric Emergency Department

Job overview

We are currently seeking a passionate induvial to join our Paediatric ED team. We have a dedicated paediatric area within our emergency department which is staffed with a dedicated team of paediatric nurses. 

We work to ensure that children presenting to the emergency department are treated in an appropriate area with suitably trained staff. 

We work closely with our paediatric in-patient area and to ensure that children are cared for by paediatric trained staff and their transition to in-patient care (if required) is seamless.

 

The unit is staffed with at least 2 registered nurses 24 hours a day and has its own full-time unit manager. In addition, we have support from a full time play specialist, a part time Children’s Advanced Nurse Practitioner as well as ED the ENP team and medical teams.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be working with the paediatric ED lead nurse and other paediatric sisters to ensure the day to day running of the department.  They will be responsible for ensuring the unit is staffed and the junior staff members are supported, meeting the urgent and emergency care KPIs and standards, liaising with the inpatient unit and the main emergency department as well as delivering direct patient care. They will also be responsible for escalating patient care needs as well as staffing problems, estates and equipment issues to the lead nurse and other appropriate pathways. The role will also include supervising and assessing both junior staff and student nurses.

The Paediatric ED department is spacious light and air conditioned. It is self-contained and has 5 trolley areas, an examination space, dedicated triage room, and spacious waiting area. With the usual nurse’s station and utility areas.  We are next door to the ED x-ray area and our radiology team will collect patients for their x-rays directly from the waiting area. We also have a dedicated space within the resuscitation area for our critically unwell patients.

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse (Child Branch)
  • ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • EPLS / APLS Provider
  • Safeguarding Children Training – Level 3
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration qualification in a relevant area.
  • Study at degree level

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in acute paediatric setting at band 5 or above
  • Proven Leadership & Management experience
  • Teaching experience
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical Audit
  • Previous experience in ED nursing
  • Involvement in implementation of change
