Job overview

Lead on the Public health agenda within the maternity service to support mothers to be to improve their health, and therefore have an improved impact on the health of their unborn child. 

The post holder will be required to influence practice, policies and strategies both within the service, the trust and within the local health economy. This will require the post holder to develop in collaboration with other specialist midwives the most appropriate care pathways to have the most effective and efficient impact.  

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team and local stakeholders to improve and protect health and wellbeing, and improve the health of families in Staffordshire, contributing to improving the population's health and reducing health inequalities within maternity services. Key work will focus upon improving outcomes of women with modifiable risk factors such as smoking, obesity and breastfeeding, developing and implementing processes to secure a year-on-year increase in uptake of immunisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·     To report to the Consultant Midwife and be responsible for ensuring that the Public Health Agenda is developed and delivered within Maternity Services. 

·     Develop in collaboration with the Consultant Midwife and specialist midwives the most appropriate care pathways identifying where and when it is for the most appropriate for public health input to be deployed to have the most effective and efficient impact.  

·    Focus upon improving outcomes of women with modifiable risk factors such as smoking, obesity and breastfeeding, and develop and implement processes to secure a year-on-year increase in uptake of immunisation.  

·     Support the service coordinators to write and revise maternity guidelines pertaining to public health agendas  

·     Support Infant Feeding Coordinator in embedding the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Standards within the service and preparation for UNICEF BFI Accreditation  

·     Support Smoking Cessation Coordinator in continued development and delivery of a stop smoking in pregnancy service, directly to pregnant mothers, to support them to successfully quit smoking during and after pregnancy and monitor outcomes as required to achieve interventions as part of SBLCBv3 Element 1  

·     Lead conversations with women and families to be around weight management during pregnancy and refer to the appropriate service  

·     Revise and refresh the immunisation strategy and communicate with NHSE validated data as part of monthly return  

·     The post holder will be required to plan for and be responsible for the implementation of training in relation to Maternity Public Health Issues.  

·    Work collaboratively and in partnership with other health care professionals, offering appropriate leadership, guidance and supervision to colleagues   

·     Assist with delivering quality improvements  

·     Take responsibility for Key Performance Indicators and report writing to demonstrate compliance with a variety of care quality indicators around the public health agenda

essential qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC midwifery registration
  • Evidence of on-going professional developme
  • Awareness of local and national policies and strategies, In Public Health, and Maternity
Desirable criteria
  • • Leadership Qualification
  • Project management experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience in all areas of Maternity Services including substantial experience of Public Health Promotion
  • Evidence of leading or participating in an audit programme
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Leading QI Projects
