Senior Staff Nurse - Band 6 -  A&T, Harplands:

Do you want to be part of an innovative and collaborative Team? We are looking for experienced applicants for a Senior Staff Nurse Band 6 post.  This is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and drive some exciting developments working as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of high-quality individualised care and treatment to adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. You will be supported by the Team to ensure we continue to maintain excellent, patient focused services in line with our national and locally agreed targets.

The Assessment and Treatment Unit provides highly specialised assessment, formulation, and intervention to meet individual needs. The service works within positive behavioural support frameworks and provides trauma-informed care. Learning Disability Services are undergoing a programme of modernisation and so this is an exciting time to join the service and be part of the transformation journey.

The post holder will practice autonomously, be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate person-centred evidence-based nursing that respects and maintains dignity and human rights. They will be responsible for proactively identifying through assessment  the care needs of patients and leading formulation and programmes of care, implementation, and the evaluation of these programmes.

Main duties of the job

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust aims to provide accessible, non-stigmatising local services that contribute to the assessment, intervention, treatment, rehabilitation and enablement of people with learning disabilities. The Trust promotes prevention, early detection and treatment of health-related issues for adults with learning disabilities. The service is wholly committed to the use of Person Centred Planning approaches and affording adults with learning disabilities opportunities to maximize full citizenship, choice and control.

The post holder will support the assessment, formulation and treatment/intervention given to patients within the Assessment and Treatment Unit; implementing clinical pathways and utilising evidence-based models of care. The post holder will work closely with colleagues to ensure timely progress through the service, and to ensure that there is a focus on discharge planning even prior to admission.

The post-holder will support senior staff in the day-to-day organisation and running of the Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To act at all times in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To perform all aspects of the role in accordance with Trust policies and other national bodies.
  • To work with a defined caseload of service users as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing assessment, care planning and care delivery. This will include the provision of highly skilled nursing care, psychological interventions, group work, clinical assessment, risk assessments / risk management, and promoting recovery and inclusion and ensuring co-production with service users and their families and carer’s.
  • To provide specialist advice to other members of staff and act as a role model.
  • To provide leadership, management and supervision / appraisal for junior nursing staff (and sometimes other members of a multi-disciplinary team) and lead / coordinate / supervise teams of staff in the delivery and evaluation of care.
  • In an in-patient setting, band 6 nurses will be required to regularly take charge of a ward, and to delegate and supervise the work of other junior staff, and may be required to oversee the safe running of a group of wards on a shift by shift basis (‘unit coordination’)
  • To liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and outside agencies in the implementation of patient care.
  • To ensure that care activities are research based and in keeping with changes in the field of activity.
  • To contribute to the development of ideas and innovative practice.
  • Nurses are expected are to consistently demonstrate the ‘Six C’s’ – namely care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.
  • To initiate and participate in departmental audit as requested by the Team Manager or Matron.
