Job overview

The role will be delivered within a speciality where the post holder will demonstrate current clinical knowledge, expertise and leadership, deliver effective governance, achieve performance targets, use information and data effectively to improve quality and minimise risk, specifically: 

 •            To provide overall management and leadership for all professional and direct care staff in the locations of responsibility, including recruitment, continuing professional development and performance issues.

 The post holder is accountable for inpatient teams; they will line manage within their areas of responsibility and they have the authority to ensure the best use of the resources necessary to sort out the fundamentals of quality of care, backed up by the appropriate administrative support. 

 The post holder will ensure that the quality of the service user experience is improved by providing front line employees with the necessary authority to prevent or to remedy shortcomings or failings in processes, systems, facilities and services that contribute to patient care.

 The post holder is responsible for developing and implementing standards across the Trust by strengthening professional clinical leadership at team level.  They will be easily identifiable to service users and carers.

 

Main duties of the job

Driving forward clinical standards, innovation, quality and managing change

Champion the quality improvement agenda, demonstrating personal commitment to continuous improvement and facilitating the approach in all clinical areas.

Work with Ward Teams to ensure the Trust expectations concerning ‘safe staffing’ are embedded, adhered to and be accountable for the appropriate deployment of nurses and care staff across wards in their sphere of responsibility and the wider site.

Encourage and foster a culture that involves and empowers nurses and other professional groups, stimulates innovation and enables participation at all levels in shaping service delivery for the future. 

Provide devolved authority, as required, to ensure objectives are met and achieve the right balance between quality, time, cost and risk whilst encouraging team-based empowerment models of problem solving.

Support the senior management team in leading redesign work across services reshaping the Nursing workforce to deliver within new structures.

Provide professional judgment and expert advice in relation to clinical assessments and care planning especially for patients with complex needs.

Strengthen links between teams and support teams in planning and delivering quality, safe and effective care.

Act as a professional consultant to all employees on environmental patient care matters, providing a role model to them in relation to high standards of care within the Service.

  • Masters Qualification in Leadership and Management or equivalent subject

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a clinical lead in a mental health environment at band 7 level or above
  • Evidence of development of nursing practice / service delivery
  • Experience of leadership in mental health settings
Desirable criteria
  • Considerable experience of working with people within Forensic Mental Health or Learning Disability Services.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Essential criteria
  • Ability to negotiate, persuade and influence at a senior level across the Trust and externally.
  • Ability to analyse highly complex information (including financial and performance data) which may be conflicting.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills
