To lead the nursing team in the delivery of high quality, evidence based, patient centred care within the Spinal Injuries Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

To assist the ward manager in a wide range of complex and sometimes conflicting priorities. Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/ clients and relatives/ carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with local and national target. At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of  care delivery.

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified. To ensure that the ward is well led and that the team are being proactive in the delivery of care.

The Sheffield Spinal Cord Injury Centre is one of the leading spinal cord injury centres nationally and one of eight centres in England designated to receive and treat patients with spinal cord injuries.

Serving a population stretching as far as East Anglia, we are the second largest spinal cord injury centre in the UK and the regional centre for excellence for Yorkshire, North and North-West England, the East and West Midlands and East Midlands.

Provide high quality services to patients within the ward/department. Sheffield Spinal Cord Injuries Centre is a specialist unit, within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

The unit provides comprehensive care and extensive rehabilitation to patients with complex spinal cord injuries, across 3 in patient wards; an outpatient facility with bespoke therapy facilities. The unit sits within the Specialist Rehabilitation Services Directorate and facilitating care for patients, carers and families across the region, with a focus on rehabilitation and supporting patients to achieve their independence prior to discharge.

  • To undertake and support in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of specific programmes of patient care.
  • Exercise judgement in assessing wide ranging patient problems and promote options for optimum patient care.
  • To maintain effective communication with all patients, carers and members of the Healthcare team.
  • To act sensitively, confidentially and with empathy in demonstrating understanding of wide ranging physical and emotional needs.
  • Work unsupervised, in charge of the ward / dept within Trust Guidelines, Policies and Procedures and the NMC codes of conduct, seeking advice on non-routine matters from line managers or Duty Matron.
  • To ensure accurate, contemporaneous and timely care records, both written and electronic.

  • Extensive post registration experience caring for patients with a long-term conditions and/ or a spinal cord injury

  • Highly developed leadership skills with excellent interpersonal skills – ability to form positive relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to manage complex workload under pressure and prioritise to meet deadlines
  • Persuasion and influencing skills – ability to present ideas and proposals effectively
