Job overview

The post of Epilepsy Specialist Nurse is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic and supportive team to provide high quality specialist care to people who live with Epilepsy.

Act as a specialist resource and independent practitioner, managing a defined caseload of patients within the agreed scope of practice and taking responsibility for continuity of care.

This will include assessing patients often with highly complex or chronic conditions, providing advice to others involved in their care, as well as planning and implementation of care packages. The running of nurse led clinics and comprehensive follow up services; and ensuring a smooth transition for patients through the relevant pathways.

 

Main duties of the job

Work as part of a team that provide  high quality patient services to people with Epilepsy and those involved with their  care/management; within a defined catchment area whilst working within local/national  standards and guidelines.

Responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.

To optimise the continuity of care of patients between the hospital and community, through facilitating opportunities for liaison between all those involved in the healthcare of the patient. 

To have relevant expertise and knowledge related to investigations and treatment options specific to epilepsy; in order to provide patients with necessary information to ensure informed consent for treatment.

 To manage a caseload of patients under supervision of the senior specialist nurse, supporting individual, agreed management regimes with the patient.

 To act sensitively, confidentially and with empathy, demonstrating an understanding of wide-ranging physical and emotional needs. Support patients and/or their relatives/carers in managing contentious, sensitive and delicate issues and dealing with challenging behaviour; seeking support of senior specialist nurse when appropriate.

 To ensure accurate, contemporaneous and timely care records, both written and electronic, having due regard for legal issues and confidentiality.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Advanced diploma in nursing or equivalent
  • 1st degree, or willing to undertake
  • To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
  • Recognised Counselling Skills Certificate, experience or willing to undertake appropriate study
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma in Epilepsy or ENB N45 or similar

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience with a proven interest in Long Term Conditions
  • Evidence of management and Leadership experience and development at ward level or similar.
  • Proven experience in the understanding of and communication with individuals with complex needs
  • Experience of effective time management and ability to prioritise own workload
  • Experience of innovative service delivery
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of neuromedicine or neurosurgery
  • Experience of head injury or neurorehabilitation
