Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for you to apply for a permanent Sister/Charge Nurse (AFC band 6) post on Firth 7 within the Cardiology department of the South Yorkshire Regional Services.
Firth 7 is a busy cardiology ward which provides an acute specialised cardiology service within STH alongside a regional service provided to patients in Rotherham, Doncaster, Bassetlaw, Barnsley and Chesterfield.
This is an important role in which the successful candidate will provide support to the Senior Sister and the rest of the team.
The applicant must be flexible, approachable, hard-working and able to use their own initiative and work under pressure. They must also possess excellent organisational and communication ability and demonstrate the capacity to develop leadership skills. Applicants will have extensive experience in Cardiology and must have completed the Cardiology competency package, or equivalent.
Maintenance of close working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team is imperative in providing an effective and high-quality patient service. We are therefore looking for a clinical expert who is committed and dedicated and has the ability to provide patients with high quality, compassionate care.
The successful candidate should –
- Have the relevant clinical skills to care for Cardiology patients
- Have significant post registration experience at AFC Band 5 or above in a relevant speciality
- Be able to work under pressure
Main duties of the job
To undertake and support in the assessment of patient care, taking a lead role in reducing the length of stay of cardiology patients.
Exercise judgement in assessing wide ranging patient problems and promote options for optimum patient care.
To maintain effective communication with all patients, carers and members of the Healthcare team.
Work unsupervised, in charge of the ward within Trust Guidelines,
To ensure accurate, contemporaneous and timely care records.
Support the Senior Sister in the maintenance of the framework of Healthcare governance.
Exercise professional judgement by applying skills and knowledge to the safe ordering, custody and administration of drugs.
To act as a role model and teacher, providing expertise in cardiology care, providing mentorship.
Support people in making better choices for their health and the health of their families.
To participate in and undertake surveys, audit and research.
To undertake PDR, Professional Development Planning and clinical supervision with identified team members.
Support the Senior Sister in all aspects of her role to ensure the smooth running of the ward.
Ensure compliance with the NMC post registration education and re-registration standards.
To act for the Senior Sister in her absence.
To assist in the initial investigation of Formal Complaints.
To act as a point of contact for other wards/departments. To be on the rota as bleep holder for Cardiology.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (valid with NMC)
- Completion of Cardiology Competency pack or equivalent.
- To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of academic achievement, working towards Degree level of study
Experience

- Extensive experience in cardiology
- Evidence of management experience

- An understanding of patient flow in a busy acute area
