Job overview

This is a rare and fantastic opportunity for a nursing professional to lead the  development and progression of  high quality support to nurse managers across the Trust with regard to nurse education, development and recruitment programmes.  The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that nurse orientated developmental / strategic recruitment expertise is proactively provided to the organisation; developing effective innovative solutions as organisationally required.

A key aspect of the post is leadership of our pre-registration nurse education support, including developing and maintaining excellent relationships with our Higher Education Institution partners.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Nursing and accountable to the Director of Nursing, the successful candidate will support the Nursing and Quality Directorate in taking the lead on specific projects related to nursing careers and professional standards nurse education, development and recruitment. Reporting on work-plans, projects to support the governance processes of the organisation are an important component of the role.

The role has responsibility for the following areas of practice:

  • Pre-registration Nurse Education
  • Continuing Professional Development for Nursing and linked to other professions
  • Nursing recruitment, including non-registered clinical staff
  • New nursing roles
  • NMC referrals and relationships
  • Nursing professional standards, including revalidation

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Head of Nursing Careers and Professional Standards will be required to employ their  nurse orientated  developmental and  strategic recruitment expertise to proactively provide  innovative solutions to develop the career pathway of Nursing at both a strategic and operational level.

A key aspect of the post is leadership of our pre-registration nurse education support, including developing and maintaining excellent relationships with our Higher Education Institution partners.

The successful applicant will take the lead on specific projects related to nursing careers and professional standards nurse education, development and recruitment. Reporting on work-plans, projects to support the governance processes of the organisation are an important component of the role.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Highly specialist knowledge, to Masters degree in nursing and substantial staff development and operational experience at a senior level.
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of personnel and Development or capacity to gain membership within 18 months of appointment.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant and varied post registration clinical experience.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing the workforce in health and social care and in particular Nursing.
  • Practical experience of producing reports and statistical data.
  • Experience in recruitment and selection practices.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the development and implementation of Apprenticeships.
  • Experience of complex project management and change management.
  • Experience of working as a practice assessor.
  • Experience in pre-registration nurse training selection.
  • Advanced understanding and interpretation of relevant laws and regulations including employment and mental health legislation.
  • Advanced understanding of the structure and funding of Further and Higher Education.
  • Proven track record of making a significant contribution to business and workforce planning and strategy.
  • Experience of change leadership, including facilitating significant change management and workforce redesign issues within a large organization.
  • Experience of effective working in a multi-site organisation across all disciplines.
  • Understanding of broad strategic direction of NHS and NHS Workforce strategy.
  • Sound awareness of systems, relationships and pressures within complex NHS organisations and experience of influencing the views/agenda of others to ensure achievement of corporate objectives in line with best practice.
  • Up to date knowledge of NMC regulatory standards and guidance.
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of effective relevant HR practices and philosophies and relevant employment legislation.
