Job overview

You will provide midwifery advice, support and care to women and their families during the preconceptual, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, in a range of environments, including clinics, birth centres and within the client's home.

In addition you will responsible for the provision of a full range of health, education and social care advice to women within an integrated model of care covering pre-conception, antenatal, labour, birth and postnatal periods.

Due to exciting development within the maternity service, we are looking for a motivated midwife to be available to work Bank within Powys. This will provide opportunity to experience working as a midwife in Powys and provide you with invaluable experience should a vacancy arise that you wish to apply for. 

You will be joining a service with one of the highest home birth rates in Wales, a high physiological birth rate and the highest breastfeeding rate in Wales.  You will be supporting women choosing to birth at one of our 6 free standing birth centres.

You will provide and coordinate antenatal and postnatal care for both midwife led care and consultant led women.

The ability to speak Welsh for this post is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Awareness of political and wider health agenda specifically Midwifery 20:20 and All Wales Normal Labour Pathway.
  • Post Registration education and professional updating in line with NMC fitness to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Child Protection in line with LSCB
  • Homebirth
  • Waterbirth

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration clinical experience
  • Range of clinical experience
  • Suturing – Able to suture without supervision
  • Obstetric emergencies – competent to lead in the management of an emergency
  • Homebirth – Able to attend as first midwife without supervision
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring – Able to interpret fetal heart deviations from normal and call appropriate help (pinnard/sonicaid)
  • Resuscitation – competent to participate as the lead in resuscitation
  • Cannulation – Able to cannulate without supervision
  • Venipuncture – Able to perform venipuncture competently
  • Examination of the newborn – Able to undertake examination of the newborn following birth and in the postnatal period unsupervised

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Normality – Able to promote, assess and deliver alternative methods to normalize care both antenatally and intrapartum
  • Breastfeeding – Able to discuss and practically apply UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Team Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
  • Antenatal Screening – Under supervision able to discuss and provide information on antenatal screening tests offered and able to give details of the choices women have following a positive screening result
  • Research, audit and evaluation skills to ensure a high-quality service
  • Caseload Management with the skill to work as autonomous practitioner
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Good networking skills
  • Ability to plan, organize and clear decision making skills and prioritising
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Desirable criteria
  • Able to discuss and provide information on antenatal screening tests offered to women in pregnancy and give the reasons why they are offered and be able to give details of the choices women have following a positive screening result
  • Ability to speak Welsh
