To provide clinical advice and support to all people who call the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU). This will involve providing real time clinical advice to women, carrying out a risk assessment and identifying appropriate pathways for women to achieve safe and effective outcomes. All advice given will be evidence-based and will be recorded contemporaneously onto the electronic patient record. The Telephone Triage midwife will be responsible for liaising with other departments and health professionals to ensure that timely and safe care is provided in the most appropriate setting. All advice given will be based on the information gathered from a rapid and thorough assessment of the symptoms described and will consider any previous calls or visits to the Maternity Assessment Unit, any pre-existing risk factors or relevant past medical history including medical, obstetric, or psychological concerns. There will also be an opportunity for the telephone triage midwife to work clinically on the Maternity Assessment Unit to undertake face to face assessments. If desired each shift can be split to incorporate both a telephone triage and clinical element.
