 JOB PROFILE

The post-holder will be an experienced, knowledgeable practitioner who provides clinically based practice development and education to the non-medical workforce.  They will role model best, evidence-based professional practice.  Clinical education support for all ‘learners at the bedside’ is a substantial part of this role.

The clinical educator will identify and support the learning needs of their clinical area. The clinical educator is key to ensuring the clinical area is a positive learning environment through acting as an expert resource, ensuring local training resources are appropriate and up-to-date, and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team and senior colleagues.

Specific education interventions will be provided and may be co-developed with the senior practice development and education team.  They will also assist in coordinating the delivery and evaluation of training. The clinical educator is key to ensuring training is grounded in good practice and will be involved in the education element of clinical governance and quality assurance. 

 

Main duties of the job

Practice Development Practitioners will be able to:

  • Act as an exemplary role model for best clinical practice and Trust values
  • Work alongside learners to facilitate their independent learning
  • Work to an agreed job plan to maximise education delivery to support staff and patient safety/experience.
  • Manage their own time to ensure a balance between clinical education and education administrative activities
  • Actively promote and contribute to an inter-professional learning environment
  • Deliver education programmes at a divisional level and where required cross divisionally in support of organisational priorities.
  • Work as part of the local and corporate practice development teams
  • Assist in anticipating and addressing the educational needs of the service
  • Work across boundaries to proactively develop and sustain partnerships
  • Participate in audit, service improvement and research projects relevant to the clinical educator role

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

 Clinical Practice

Work alongside learners delivering clinical care for the majority of the role.  Use coaching/mentoring-style techniques during contact time with learners to identify learning needs, improve standards, and escalate concerns where appropriate

Have highly developed clinical skills relevant to their areas of responsibility such that they may act as an expert resource for learners

Demonstrate and promote a high standard of person-centred, holistic care.

Draw upon an appropriate range of multi-agency and inter-professional resources in their practice

Work independently and within a team structure according to the standards set by their professional body

Demonstrate leadership in influencing the department and multi-disciplinary team

Respond to unpredictable events with composure, using professional judgement to maintain the safety of those for whom they are responsible and seek assistance where required

Apply specialist knowledge and a problem-solving approach to effectively plan, implement and evaluate person-centred care

Demonstrate and promote the effective management of patient journey / flow by teaching and contributing to the development of systems for operational performance

Model and teach adequate patient documentation that fulfils professional standards.  Contribute to monitoring and maintaining the standard of documentation

Practice a high standard of interpersonal communication to convey information and advocate for the interests and well-being of those for whom they are responsible

 Practice Development and Education

Maintain personal professional development through self-directed learning and engaging with their line manager to address identified learning needs

Maintain own professional portfolio and support others to do the same

Participate in and actively seek peer review to reflect upon and improve clinical and educational practice

Advocate for and contribute to a working environment that promotes continuous learning and development, evidence-based practice and succession planning

Maintain a forward view of the skill mix within their assigned clinical area to anticipate and work with the senior practice development team to respond proactively to emerging educational priorities

Actively contribute to providing a positive learning environment that makes effective use of resources (e.g., human, financial, equipment, space)

Able to apply assessment methods to assess the progress of learners, maintain records of proficiency and provide reports on training as required

Monitor and support teams to maintain their clinical competence

Able to participate in, identify and describe basic principles of educational programme design, including the use of learning outcomes and assessments

Demonstrate continuous professional development in a range of evidence-based learning and teaching methods

Provide sensitive feedback focused on the progress of learners and foster a climate in which best practice can be safely debated and reflected upon

Participate in the evaluation of education programmes and the dissemination of results

Provide teaching and support to learners from the multi-disciplinary team

Ensure appropriate induction and orientation of newly appointed colleagues

Assist senior practice development and education team with the coordination of learner placements

Support management team to ensure statutory and mandatory training updates, as well as role /speciality updates, are completed and necessary records maintained

Leadership and Management

 Act as a role model and resource for evidence-based practice

Work with the multi-disciplinary team leads to deliver practice development and education strategy

Proactively establish, develop, and maintain inter-professional relationships and attend relevant meetings.

Provide data to the senior practice development and education team to assist with the collation of the yearly training needs analysis

Participate in ensuring staff have an annual appraisal and personal development plan, with appropriate aims and objectives agreed and monitored

Provide practice development and education input to appraisal and personal development plans of clinical staff where appropriate

Participate in recruitment and retention initiatives relevant to practice development and education

Work collaboratively to provide practice development and education input to effective documentation, pathways, protocols, and guidelines for care.

Demonstrate a commitment to share expertise and disseminate information

Communicate practice development and education priorities to learners and colleagues

Support management teams in undertaking performance management of staff where practice development and education needs exist.

Demonstrate leadership in developing the team and service to function effectively in continuously improve patient care

Participate in initiating change and implementing service and practice development, making the best use of resources to improve practice and health outcomes

Respect the diversity of patients, colleagues and learners.  Provide inclusive clinical care and education
