Job overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS trust is looking to appoint a Matron to work within the Cardiology department in the Heart centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital for a year long secondment.

You will work in a clinically led partnership with the Divisional Nurse, Clinical Director and Operational Service Manager to shape and deliver the ambitions of the service, as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team. The Matron is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective day-to-day running across the directorate, delivering key quality, performance, and financial plans, service improvements within the Clinical Directorate, line managing designated staff and reporting to the Clinical Director.

Your role as the Cardiology Matron will be to provide leadership, support, and motivation to our high performing team, using critical thinking in clinical decision making to maintain a safe and efficient environment for patients and staff. You will join an enthusiastic team, who will work together to ensure that nursing, in conjunction with other aspects of clinical care, are delivered to the highest standard, and in line with the local and national strategy.

Main duties of the job

The Matron is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective day-to-day running of the Clinical Directorate, delivering key quality, performance, and financial plans, achieving key service improvements within the Clinical Directorate and line managing designated staff.

 

The post holder will provide professional and management leadership to all nursing staff in the Clinical Directorate in order to achieve the Trust’s corporate objectives and will be expected to make a positive contribution to the delivery of health care across the local health community.

This post is within the Directorate of Cardiothoracic which comprises of Intervention, Imaging, structural, Cardiac Rhythm Management, Cardiology, heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, inherited cardiac conditions, cardiac research, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Integrated Community Services, Thoracic and Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care.

Essential criteria
  • *Qualifications - Relevant professional/clinical qualification (RN and/or RM)
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience
  • Current or on-going Masters level study in management is desirable
  • *Experience/Knowledge - Substantial experience of operational (and strategic) management in an acute hospital setting in a senior nurse role.
  • Knowledge and experience of leading significant change, delivering tangible and sustained improvements.
  • Track record of effectively handling competing priorities, meeting challenging deadlines and delivering under pressure.
  • Experience of developing business and workforce plans in line with future service requirements
  • Through knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing the NHS e.g. relevant NSF, NICE guidance
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of practice and policy across a broad range of responsibilities e.g. financial systems and budgetary control. Corporate and Clinical Governance, Health and Safety and Human Resources.
  • Experience of motivating staff and improving performance
  • Organisational skills – able to deliver objectives within an agreed timeframe
  • Leadership skills – excellent leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams.
