We are looking for a dynamic and creative Band 6 Charge Nurse to join the team here at Thames House. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The Littlemore Mental Health Centre opened in the early 2000’s and sits in the pretty Village of Sandford-on-Thames on the outskirts of Oxford. 

The site sits within commuter distance of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Hertfordshire and London City. Due to our central location, we boast a hugely inclusive and diverse staff group and consider ourselves lucky to have such diversity within our team. 

Main duties of the job

Thames House is an innovative and dedicated team that comprises of a large MDT. 

As a Charge Nurse you will work closely with the Unit’s Modern Matron, Ward Manager and Clinical Nurse Lead. You will be an integral part of the MDT comprising of nursing, medical, psychology and occupational therapy team members. You will be able to develop your own practice, and support others to develop theirs.

With a reputation for excellence and providing a range of evidence-based care, our service offers an attachment model of care which is tailored to each individual’s needs along with a range of therapies and experiences to assist in person’s recovery journey. We have established very effective ways of working with the patients to help them identify and reach their goals whilst keeping them safe and supporting them onwards to a new life in the community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are committed to the ongoing development of our staffing group and actively encourage the continued professional development of our employees. We'll continue to support you through regular supervision and ensure you have the relevant training in order to really succeed in this role. We'll ensure we listen to what it is you need so you feel confident in leading as Charge Nurse. 

Thames House is a 26 bed low secure unit for women with a diagnosis of mental illness and/or personality disorder. Many of our service users have had experience of the criminal justice system in the past. The unit is split into a 10 bed high dependency unit and a 16 bed lower dependency unit.

Individuals applying for this post will require a positive “can do” attitude and first rate clinical skills and knowledge to work with very complex and often challenging patients. Also essential is a calm and reflective nature and the ability to offer leadership and containment to the ward. 
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute and participate in the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of care and treatment for people with mental health problems.

This post attracts a RSU Lead of £1,446 per annum on top of your annual salary.

It is mandatory for you to complete PEACE Teamwork and other training directly related to the job.

You will work a rotating shift pattern to cover our 24-hour, 7 day a week service.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • Have experience in a leadership and management role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Theoretical knowledge of MHA legislation including the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children and adults policy
Desirable criteria
  • Has previous experience in working as a staff nurse in forensic mental health care setting

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Effective leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent communication and presentational skills
Desirable criteria
  • Able to take direction and instruction
