Job overview

Due to recent expansion we are looking for a caring and enthusiastic individuals to join Pre- operative Assessment service,  working as part of a dedicated team helping to deliver high quality care and support for patients and their families attending the outpatient pre op service. 

The service is continuously growing and sees in the region of 20,000 patients per year. We offer an excellent service to patients from a variety of specialties across the Trust undergoing elective surgery.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential and you must be committed to a high standard of patient care and safety. You will have a flexible attitude to work and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

 

Main duties of the job

The role will involve working cross site as the service offers appointments at both City and QMC campuses.  The service is open from Monday to Friday  from 8am to 6pm. There is no requirement to work on night shifts , weekends and bank holidays. 

We have full time and part time position for our HCA team in centralised pre op assessment. . Typical full time hours will have  4 working days across a  week.

You would be working under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse.   All training and support will be provided for the successful candidate.  Workload  includes  undertaking  procedures such as ECGs,  blood taking  (venepuncture), and taking patients observation  (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, height and weight).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You must be educated to GCSE standard. It is preferable that you have previous experience of working within a busy NHS environment; however training will be provided for the successful candidate. If successful you will be expected to undertake training in venepuncture and ECG recording. If you are an external candidate you will also be expected to attend a 2 week training course which ensures you are proficient in the role of the healthcare worker before going out into clinical practice.

Ensure that patients are helped to retain their dignity and individuality.
Ensuring that patients are chaperoned, as required, retaining their dignity and individuality.
Participate in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients as required.
Direct and escort patients and visitors around the clinic/ward and to other Departments.
Report back to registered staff all concerns about the patients condition.
Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe-keeping of patients' property, in accordance with Patients' Property Procedure.
Be aware of the need for confidentiality both in the written and spoken word.
Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and
procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.
Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident (Datix) in accordance with Trust policy.
Report problems with equipment and facilities to the nurse in charge.
Be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the need to develop oneself and to strive to increase personal knowledge.
Undertake any ‘Working in New Ways Packages’, which have been identified by the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse/Clinical Manager and are integral to the role requirements and specialty area. Under normal circumstances these must be completed in accordance with the ‘Working in New Way’s Policy and Guidelines.
Be aware of the need for confidentiality both in the written and spoken word.
Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to carry out duties competently and efficiently.
To safely move and handle patients in accordance with the Trust Health and Safety Policy and assist the registered nursing team as requested.
To undertake specific duties that may be required in accordance to local competencies, in addition to those attached relating to the specific department.

Training & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • To be educated to ‘O’ level, GCSE grade C or above or equivalent standard including English and Maths
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ / QCF 3 in Healthcare Evidence of Professional Development. Completed HCA academy at NUH Completed Care Certificate
  • Completed HCA academy at NUH Completed Care Certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience dealing with customers, patients, or clients in a work environment
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in health Care or social care setting
  • Experience in working in outpatients or day care unit.
  • Completion of venepuncture / cannulation package /ECG

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to pass on information accurately
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and able to communicate these to appropriate staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate Computer literacy & use of IT skills – e.g. e-mail, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate with multidisciplinary team

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties.
  • Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
