We are looking for a full time Band 6 OT, or Nurse, who is passionate about supporting people with Neurodiverse (ADHD , Autism , Learning Disability) needs and experienced in working within mental health/ forensic services, supporting people with complex needs, to come and join us in Offender Health. 

This post could be offered as a job share and part time applications will be considered.

We are looking for a person who  can help us to provide high quality equitable healthcare for people with Neurodevelopmental Conditions and deliver excellent mental health care and support. 

The post is based at HMP Morton Hall, Nottinghamshire. 

You will join a highly motivated and skilled team who provide integrated healthcare (physical, mental health and substance misuse services) to approximately 300 prisoners. 

This exciting post has been created for you to work as a valued member of a skilled and supportive prison mental health team.  You will be working to deliver two pathways of care (Mental Health and Neurodiversity) and will receive the support of the mental health matron in the prison and the wider Neurodiversity Team, working across prisons, including 8 practitioners , a   Specialist Clinician (OT) and Clinical Lead (Speech and Language Therapist).

The role requires delivering assessment , treatment and support for people who have Autism, ADHD, Intellectual/Learning Disability and mental illness in prison.

Main duties of the job

You be required to deliver against pathways designed to identify the needs of people with Neurodevelopmental Conditions, specifically, Autism, ADHD and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and mental illness, within your designated prison establishment.

You will directly provide screening, assessment and diagnosis, and support others to offer adapted psychosocial interventions.

You will hold a caseload of people who are identified to have needs associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or mental ill health.

You will provide psychoeducation, individual and group work and ensure continuity of care for men on release or transfer from your prison.

You will advocate for people with neurodevelopmental disorders within the prison system and promote best practice and the safety and wellbeing of patients with Neurodevelopmental Conditions. You will make recommendations for reasonable adjustments.

You will work to the Mental Health Clinical matron providing support for the mental health  pathway and working as part of this team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be supported by a clinical lead offering regular supervision and will work with colleagues in other prisons.

You will be working with the clinical lead to develop this new service, establishing care pathways and developing resources.  You and the team will focus on equity and continuity of care for people with neurodevelopmental conditions.

You will be supported by your clinical lead to improve the outcomes of people with neurodiverse needs in HMP Morton Hall.

The Directorate provides healthcare to 8 Prisons and one short Stay Immigration Facility in the counties of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. As such you are part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals with access to appropriate peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development.

This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust.  This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period.  This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • First level registered nurse, Mental Health / Learning Disability or Registered Occupational Therapist or Speech and Language Therapist
  • • Further specialist knowledge, post registration qualification/significant post registration experience or other formal training.
Desirable criteria

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Clinical experience of the assessment, treatment or support of people who have Autism, ADHD and or Intellectual/Learning Disabilities in health or social care settings
  • • Experience of developing person centred care plans, WRAP or safe and well plans, reasonably adjusted to meet individual needs
  • • Experience of contributing to the formulation or differential diagnosis of individuals with AUTISM, ADHD and or LD/ID, where mental illness may also be present.
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of working in criminal justice setting.
  • Use of adapted therapeutic approaches for people who struggle with verbally medicated treatments. (eg. adapted CT, CBT, DBT, NLP, ACT)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Awareness of the wider NHS Modernisation Agenda, Transforming Care and NHSE expectations for Offender Health with regard to the identification and support of people with neurodevelopmental disorders
  • • Experience in the delivery of CBT/DBT informed interventions and how to adapt or adjust to suit the needs of people with neurodevelopmental disorder
  • • Good understanding of risk assessment process

Skills

  • • IT skills including Work, Excel and electronic patient record systems.
