The Mental Health Division of Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust comprises of three directorates; Adult Mental Health, Mental Health Services for Older People and Specialist Services. Main duties of the job

Mental Health Services for Older People is a major provider of specialist mental health services for older people in Nottingham City and the wider county. The service caters to the needs of all people suffering from dementia, regardless of age and those presenting with severe mental health illnesses. Services are provided in an in-patient and community basis and comprise of:

  • In-patient services -
  • Intensive Home Treatment Team
  • Rapid Response Liaison Psychiatry
  • Community Mental Health Teams
  • Memory Assessment Services
  • Working Age Dementia Service
  • Dementia Outreach Services
  • Psychological Therapies

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ward Manager post within the care unit of Older People Mental Health Services . Silver birch ward is based within the site of Highbury hospital in Bulwell, Nottingham.  Silver birch Ward  is a 18 bedded, mixed gender ward which provides dementia related assessment and individualised recovery focused care packages to older adult service users.

As the Ward Manager you will be overseeing care approaches and systems of delivery. You will be a central figure of providing strong leadership throughout the wider multidisciplinary team ensuring that high standards are maintained and improved upon with the support of the Matron and Service Manager. Staff supervision, performance monitoring, governance issues and CQC compliance are key areas you will be focusing upon.

You must hold a current NMC registration and have advanced experience of working with people with complex Mental Health problems; preferably within an inpatient setting. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual holding a strong interest in developing both personally and professionally. You will have access to comprehensive clinical and managerial supervision and annual personal appraisal development. 

The main responsibilities of the role are:-

To be responsible for the operational management of a ward team which support and promotes the delivery of high quality health service to a diverse group of patients, their families and carers, in accordance with quality practice and procedures.

To provide continuing leadership and development responsibilities ensuring the effective delivery of clinical/evidence based practice by the team in line with the clinical strategy, service specifications and operational & financial parameters.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Qualification (Mental Health/Learning Disabilities) plus further specialist knowledge/post registration experience to diploma level or equivalent underpinned by theory within physical healthcare or other formal training.
  • Maintain current registration with the NMC/HCPC and adheres to the NMC Code. Demonstrates continuing Professional Development within their specialism.
  • Management and Leadership related qualifications

  • Willingness to undertake new clinical practices, education and training that will enhance service delivery
  • The ability to deal with and resolve conflict
  • The ability to perform budget management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in managing a staff team

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of change management principles and implementation
  • Knowledge of skills to professionally develop of others and identification of training requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of the Care Programme Approach, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty and Safeguarding etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current legislation and understanding of clinical risk assessments
  • Knowledge of leadership methodology and principle of application
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of national and local issues impacting of nursing care.
