Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual who acts as a role model and has strong leadership skills to direct our Education and Training function for staff across within our theatres. Applications are invited from Allied Health Professionals (AHP) or nurses with a passion for clinical education and practice development with the drive to ensure that all the member of our teams experience is of high quality, safe, and fit for purpose support.

You will support and coordinate the development of Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants and both pre and post registration nursing/ODP students by arranging educational activities and assessments of learning within the department.

This role will develop training programmes to standardize practice and ensure that quality is at the centre of everything we do for our patients and to support the wider multidisciplinary team.

The post holder must have the ability to work as part of a team as well as being able to work autonomously. The role requires an ability to act as an expert resource, provider and role model within clinical areas with a flexible and adaptable approach, responding to the demands within the Trust.

 

Main duties of the job

You will share clinical skills and knowledge in collaboration with educational plans, to ensure on-going clinical competency validation, alongside core skills and essential education for clinical staff. The role will focus on improving quality and efficiency in clinical care, through education, to enhance positive patient care outcomes. In addition to delivering classroom based education, there is an expectation that the successful candidate will work with clinical staff in the operating theatre department to ensure that competency assessments are carried out in a timely manner to improve patient care. 

 Experience of teaching, supervising and assessing healthcare students in the practice setting and excellent communication skills are essential for this role. Willingness to pursue a Master's level qualification in education will also be expected if the applicant is not already working towards this qualification.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Level 1/Registered ODP
  • Teaching and assessing qualification and up to date mentoring qualification
  • Post-registration theatre course or other relevant to specialty
  • Leadership development
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Assessors Award
  • Teaching degree

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in perioperative care at a senior level, in at least two of the three domains (anaesthetics, scrub and recovery) and be able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the 3rd domain
  • Evidence of implementing change in practice
  • Experience of mentoring and assessing in clinical practice
  • Experience of audit
  • Knowledge and experience of practice development
