We are seeking an exceptional leader to join our team as Head of Women's Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN). This is a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within our maternity and neonatal services.

As Head of Women's Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement, you will provide strategic leadership to drive excellence in governance, learning, and service development across our perinatal pathways. Working closely with our Director of Midwifery, Chief Nurse, senior clinical teams, and external partners, you will lead on embedding a culture of continuous quality improvement, ensuring compliance with national safety standards, and implementing learning from external reviews such as MBRRACE and Ockenden.

Main duties of the job

This role involves leading & overseeing the perinatal governance framework, ensuring robust risk management, incident investigation, & learning processes. You will drive continuous improvement in maternity & neonatal services, ensuring high standards of safety, effectiveness, & patient experience. You will work collaboratively across our integrated care system, regional networks, & national bodies to share learning & best practice. As an expert in governance, you will provide leadership on regulatory compliance, audit, & quality assurance to ensure services meet & exceed national standards. A key part of your role will be engaging with families, service users,& staff to foster a culture of openness, learning, & compassionate care. You will also support & mentor governance teams to develop their capability in quality improvement & assurance.

We are looking for a highly experienced midwifery or nursing professional with a strong background in clinical governance, patient safety,& quality improvement. The ideal candidate will be a strategic & collaborative leader with experience in perinatal services & a track record of delivering system-wide improvements. You will be a strong communicator who can influence & engage stakeholders at all levels, including frontline teams, senior leaders, & external regulators. Most importantly, you will be passionate about delivering safe, high-quality care, ensuring that every  family receives the best possible experience.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Master’s degree/equivalent postgraduate experience or currently on a Masters pathway
  • Project Management Qualification
  • Quality Improvement Methodology Training
  • PSIRF Training
Desirable criteria
  • Project Management Qualification
  • Experience in the implementation of PSIRF

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in perinatal risk management and governance
  • Experience of working with a wide range of staff to deliver effective risk management strategies and quality improvement
  • Experience of collaboration with system partners
  • Experience of working in, developing and implementing systems to monitor and measure quality or risk and provide required assurances
  • Experience of presenting and articulating governance, quality risk systems, processes and information to meetings or committees
  • Analysis of complex issues and evidence of dealing with these in a planned manner
  • In-depth and highly developed knowledge and expertise in relation to national and local governance requirements in perinatal services
  • Experience of writing thematic reviews
  • Experience of supporting maternity services during a CQC inspection
  • Experience of meeting the requirements for NHSR
  • Experience of analysing the service performance against nationally required improvements
  • Experience of risk management in other specialities/ other sectors
