Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Resuscitation training department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). The service is expanding its well-established team who work as part of the Recognise and Respond (RRT) service and is therefore hoping to recruit an experienced, skilled, and highly motivated healthcare professional as a Resuscitation Officer. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate involvement and interest within resuscitation practice, education and/or the care of deteriorating patients.
The Recognise and Response Resuscitation Services provides basic life support training to all staff within the NNUH and Cromer District Hospital. As well as basic life support training we offer Immediate and Advanced Life Support training for staff who participate within the care of the deteriorating Newborn, Paediatric and Adult patient.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision and to co-ordinate their activities in order to support the Lead Resuscitation Officer(s) in ensuring that an efficient resuscitation service is provided to the Trust. This will include managing their own workload, time, clinical and divisional responsibilities.
- To plan, organise and implement resuscitation training for all staff within the Trust. To assist the Lead Resuscitation Officer(s) in the development of policies, procedures and equipment specifications relating to resuscitation.
- To adhere to local Trust policies, professional standards and Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
- To participate in the audit of resuscitation attempts, equipment and ReSPECT orders.
- To carry a cardiac arrest bleep and attend patients in peri-arrest and arrest situations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Resuscitation Officers carry the cardiac arrest bleep/Alertive supporting patients in cardiac arrest and deteriorating situations.
The Resuscitation Service actively participates in multi-disciplinary audit activity within the clinical area. This includes data collection for the National Cardiac Arrest Audit, audit of equipment and audits of ReSPECT documentation.
The Resuscitation Service communicates research developments to all colleagues ensuring the findings are incorporated into clinical practice and training where appropriate.
The Resuscitation Service networks with Resuscitation Officers in local and national Hospitals to share best practice.
The Resuscitation Service offers support for further development and education.
- As part of the resuscitation team, provide evidence based specialist advice, support and in-depth procedural/policy knowledge relating to resuscitation issues to all Trust staff and the wider health community including patients and relatives. The post holder is required to carry a cardiac arrest bleep and attend patients in peri-arrest and arrest situations
- Provide resuscitation expertise during attendance at cardiorespiratory arrests and medical emergencies, following appropriate training. This will required sudden explosive effort when running to emergency calls.
- The post holder will have direct exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances on a frequent basis including exposure to adult and paediatric resuscitation situations and to patients who have died
- Following training and when appropriate, to act as part of the resuscitation team providing advanced life support skills such as intravenous/intraosseous cannulation, ECG interpretation, defibrillation, administration of emergency drugs and to act as ‘Team Leader’ where necessary
- Provide support to staff, relatives and others who may be upset during exposure to emotional situations in relation to cardiac arrest and deceased patients
- To provide training in adult, paediatric, maternal and new-born basic, intermediate and advanced life support in accordance with Resuscitation Council guidelines. The post holder is required to provide both demonstration and actual use of resuscitation equipment
- To train staff in the use of resuscitation equipment as appropriate to their role
- Support the provision, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of the resuscitation service for all patients and staff
- Be flexible to the service delivery as emergency needs demand, troubleshooting, prioritising and reallocating workload within the team

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC Register or HCPC Practitioner
- To have completed ALS, EPALS or NLS Course and hold a valid provider certificate in either course or equivalent experience.
Experience

- Experience of working in an NHS Acute Hospital, including exposure to assessing and managing both deteriorating and arrested patients – adults and children
Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of current developments in health care and resuscitation practice, including ability to demonstrate understanding of resuscitation issues facing the Trust
- Excellent communication and interpersonal and teaching skills including being able to teach a range of clinical staff and provide effective feedback
