An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Infant Feeding Team.

Do you want to be part of the team supporting women with their feeding choices and helping the unit to work towards retaining its BFI accreditation?

You be will be supporting the Infant Feeding Co-ordinator and Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife to implement best practice standards relating to infant feeding, while promoting informed choice and safe/effective feeding practices for all women and babies.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

  • Run infant feeding drop in support clinics with indirect supervision from the Infant Feeding Co-ordinator and/or Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife.
  • Run antenatal infant feeding workshops without direct supervision.
  • Support all parents to make informed choices regarding feeding and implement plans to enable all parents to initiate and establish feeding their baby regardless of their chosen feeding method.

We are pleased to inform you that the plans for St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust to come together as one new organisation have now been formally approved by the Secretary of State. Our new Trust will be called Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and will officially launch on Saturday 1st July 2023.

Any applicants who secure an offer of employment and/ or are due to commence their new role from 1st July 2023 onwards are advised that their conditional offer and contract of employment will be issued as per our normal recruitment process but will be under the new name of the organisation. The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

From 1st July we have come together as a single organisation under the name Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Trust delivers acute hospital care, intermediate care, community, and primary care services to a population of over 600,000 people with a combined workforce of around 9000 dedicated and skilled staff from 17 locations including Whiston, Southport & Formby, St Helens, Ormskirk and Newton hospitals.

The Trust provides regional services for burns, plastic surgery and spinal injuries to more than 4 million people across Mersey and West Lancashire, Cheshire, the Isle of Man and North Wales.

KEY DUTIES

  • Run infant feeding drop in support clinics with indirect supervision from the Infant Feeding Co-ordinator and/or Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife.
  • Run antenatal infant feeding workshops without direct supervision.
  • Support all parents to make informed choices regarding feeding and implement plans to enable all parents to initiate and establish feeding their baby regardless of their chosen feeding method

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide one-to-one client care, implementing and evaluating the care planned in relation to infant feeding in conjunction with the midwife.
  • To adhere to and communicate the St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Newborn Feeding Policy
  • To provide a transitional link between hospital, home and the local breastfeeding support groups for new mothers within 48 hours of their transfer home, or within 48 hours of a home birth.
  • To identify mothers who are least likely to continue breastfeeding and to offer the appropriate specialist level of support.
  • To identify tongue ties in babies and refer the baby and mother for appropriate treatment, while providing infant feeding support to maintain safe and effective feeding and optimise the health and well-being of the baby.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary group, to deliver culturally sensitive accessible breastfeeding peer support programme.
  • To support the continuation of breastfeeding in the home and in the wider community with Drop in Clinics, telephone support, ward support and one to one support with breast feeding mothers from the community.
  • To take part in the planning and delivery of social marketing events to promote breastfeeding.
  • Work with women with sick babies on the Neonatal Unit and the Paediatric Wards with both initiating and establishing breastfeeding, and to support with any ongoing feeding concerns.
  • Ensure due regard is given to needs, customs, values and spiritual beliefs of women and their families

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To ensure records are legible, accurate, contemporaneous, signed, dated and are maintained in accordance Trust Policy on Record Keeping.
  • To update the Infant Feeding Team databases and Maternity Medway I.T. system as appropriate

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To undertake educational sessions about the benefits of breastfeeding.
  • To provide educational sessions for women and actively participate in infant feeding workshops
  • To provide one to one coaching to develop feeding skills for parents and staff
  • To be familiar with and use any computerised system integral to the running of the service

RESEARCH & AUDIT

  • The post holder will be required to assist in the collection and inputting of data for audit purposes
  • Audit and monitor “Bounty” bags to check for compliance with the Baby Friendly Initiative and the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes
  • Undertake Infant Feeding Assessments and BFI audits on staff and patients.
  • Maintain and order stocks of infant feeding leaflets/materials and other resources for the Maternity Service.
  • Maintain stocks of educational materials pertinent to the provision of all Infant Feeding Training sessions delivered by the team within the Trust/ Maternity Service.
