Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Ward 4C team at Whiston Hospital.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to provide leadership and expertise to ensure the provision of a high quality service to colorectal and general surgical patients.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to provide care in with the best practice, local, regional and national guidelines.
To act as a role model and expert practitioner.
To ensure the safe, efficient and effective management of the service within allocated resources.
Responsible for risk in relation to matters pertaining to Ward 4C.
To provide managerial and professional support to the Colorectal and General Surgery service and undertake delegated responsibility in the absence of the Matron.
The post holder will work within the framework of the NMC Code, other NMC guidance and Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies and Guidelines.
The post holder will have responsibility for both clinical staff and governance issues and continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and development of care plans and will ensure optimal standards of care on a 24 hour basis.

Acute Care
Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
Community Services
Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Essential criteria
- 1st Level RGN
- Evidence of on-going professional development or a relevant diploma
- Recognised teaching certificate – mentorship or ENB 998.
- ILS Certification

- Leadership/Management qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Five years post registration experience
- At least two years as Band 6 in an acute environment
- Evidence of quality improvement in patient care
- Previous management experience i.e. patient case load / ward sister / specialist nurse.
- Awareness of how audit may influence quality of patient care
- Knowledge of and participation in audit
- Awareness, understanding and application of current evidence based practices
- Evidence of teaching and education experience
