Job overview

The post holder will:

Support the Senior Nurse Manager (SNM) in the safe and effective delivery of anaesthetic and recovery practice for patients in the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories (Cath Lab). 

 

Act as an expert clinical resource coordinating learning and development of anaesthetic and recovery skills for the cath lab nursing team.

 

Work as part of the multi-disciplinary clinical team in the delivery of care for patients undergoing cardiovascular interventional procedures in the cath labs.

Main duties of the job

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Act as a resource/advisor to all staff in the delivery of care, ensuring that specialised needs of patients are met

Works collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families

Evaluates the effectiveness of service delivery and quality of care and takes action to improve services

 

To provide appropriate level of clinical expertise to support the provision of 1st on call cover.

CLINICAL

Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs and varying levels of complexity

 

Collect, collate, evaluate and report information maintaining accurate patient records

 

Provide sedation to EP/Pacing patient’s – Training provided

 

Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met provide skilled assistance to the operator and anaesthetist during cardiovascular interventional procedures

Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives

Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations, participating in out of hours emergency procedures.

Collect, collate and report information, maintaining accurate records in line with NMC, HPC and Trust policy

Respect confidential information obtained in the course of professional practice and upholds the principles of Caldicott and the Data Protection Act

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

Accept delegated line management responsibilities of other team members including performance development reviews and personal development planning.

Support the Cath Lab Management Team to maximise best use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in periprocedural / perioperative care. 

Participate in the recruitment and retention of staff.

 

Support the Cath Lab Manager with the monitoring of performance of staff ensuring that learning needs are identified through personal development planning/supervised practice.

Promotes the development of services within Cath Lab and assists the cath lab management team to implement change.

 Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources 

Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote/ implement best practice in the Catheter Laboratories.

Maintain readiness of all relevant equipment and ensure appropriate safe use

 PROFESSIONAL

Provide and make effective use of learning and development opportunities for the Cath Lab team

 Develop own “expert” clinical knowledge and participate in the development of others

Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and continuing professional development requirements

Coordinate and deliver training programmes and promote an effective clinical learning environment

 Act as a mentor for all students and newly qualified registered practitioners.

 QUALITY

Assist the Cath Lab management team with the development and implementation of any Cath Lab action plan.

Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others, participate in the development of same.

Continually monitor standards of care and lead the improvement of care, through the clinical quality monitoring group, audit and research

Support patient and public involvement activities, leading to service improvement

Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights and take action when your own or other people’s actions undermine these rights

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • RGN or Registered ODP
  • Diploma/Degree related to health care practice or equivalent experience
  • Anaesthetics and recovery qualification.
  • Post-Registration qualification or evidence of further study related to peri-operative practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Degree related to health care practice

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Participated in service development and implementation of change.
  • Ability to develop and maintain communication with a range of people about difficult matters/situations.
  • Basic knowledge of resource management within the clinical setting
  • Moderate IT skills in word processing and spreadsheets
  • Able to manage own workload, coordinate the work of others and work with minimal supervision
