Job overview
The role involves the provision of care for patients undergoing spinal surgery, with spinal cord injury or spinal conditions during their in-patient stay and into the out-patient setting. The role enhances the patient experience during and after their admission by meeting their individual needs,and supporting them through their experience.
The role is varied depending upon patient need, with the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills. You will be supported in managing care for spinal patients and working with the MDT to ensure patient receive the highest standard of care.
You will be an integral member of the Spinal team playing a part in the wider remit of the spinal nursing team by providing post-operative care and advice, as required, and support nursing staff to develop their knowledge and skills within the specialty.
It is essential that applicants have practical experience within the Spinal / Orthopaedic field and preferable that they hold the clinical examination module of the MSc pathway complemented by a high level of personal and professional credibility.

Associate Specialist Nurse
Essential criteria
- First Level Registered Nurse
- Current NMC registration
- Diploma
- Teaching and assessing qualification
- Clinical examination Level 7
Desirable criteria
- Degree
- Post registration qualification in specialist area
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous acute spinal/orthopaedic or neuroscience experience
- Previous pre-op assessment experience
- Evidence of ongoing/recent post registration development
- Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
- Experience in the supervision of junior nursing staff
- Participation in service development and implementation of change
- Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialist area
- Able to perform comprehensive patient assessment, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care
- Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues across health and social care settings
- Capable of demonstrating a visible high profile approach to the role
- Demonstrate leadership and motivational skills
