Job overview

To provide dental nurse support when required by the Service and to assist in the full range of dental care provided to patients of Community Dental Services.
To support the dental team in the provision of dental care in various settings across Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton, i.e., dental departments within health centres and acute hospitals

This will include a wide range of treatments for a broad client base which includes children, patients with additional needs, learning disability and elderly patients

The post is clinic based.  The post holder may be asked to undertake duties in neighbouring clinics when required for holiday or sickness relief or temporary redeployment.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have responsibility for participating as a key member of the dental team and other agencies to promote and maintain the dental health and wellbeing of dental patients.

Contribute to the development of policy and services to reflect the needs of the local  population. 

Report and record incidents as per Trust protocols and procedures. 

Deliver pre- and post-operative instructions as required by the clinician. 

Implement accurate paper and electronic record keeping processes as per Trust policies and procedures.

Work in partnership with other professionals to ensure patients are treated in the appropriate environment

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Recording of treatment, including charting from the clinicians instructions and other associated clerical work.
Preparation of filling materials, impression materials, instruments, equipment, dressings and syringes.
Clearing away used instruments and materials and keeping the treatment area clean whilst adhering to the highest Infection Prevention and Control procedures
Medical emergency treatment for collapse, eg coronary attack, fainting, bleeding tooth socket, epilepsy etc.
Assisting at preparation for investigations, eg x-ray procedures, blood tests and bacteriological tests.
Triage of patients attending for emergency treatment.
Management of children attending the clinic.
Providing the patient with pre and post-operative instructions and information prior to safely discharging the patient following, all types of dental treatment and minor oral surgery, and ensuring that the instructions are fully understood.
Care and minor maintenance of equipment such as high speed drills and equipment utilised within the dental environment
Assisting dental staff with all methods of treatment and surgical procedures working in all areas of the Hospital when necessary, including barrier care.
Communicating with other departments within when necessary, ensuring that patient's further treatment is arranged.
Maintaining stocks in cupboards, clearing cupboards and checking expiry dates on bottles and reordering stocks as necessary.
In conjunction with nursing and dental staff, taking part in the introduction of trials of new equipment.
The post holder shall as necessary provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues.
The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • National qualification for dental nurses or equivalent and on GDC register
Desirable criteria
  • NEBDN post certificate qualification e.g. Oral health

Knowledge/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experienced dental nurse
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in extended dental nurse role (e.g. radiography)
