Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within  the ORST Care Group (Oral Surgery, Oral Diagnosis, Radiography, Special Care Dentistry and Dental Theatres) and applications are invited for the role of Dental Nurse Manager. This is a permanent post and open to those who fulfil the person specification.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, professional individual with excellent clinical and communication skills and the ability to provide a clear focus for clinical and managerial leadership across the department. The candidate will work closely with the Assistant Director of Nursing and Clinical Support Managers to ensure the efficient running of the department as well as the management of the senior dental nurses.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is a highly visible and accessible senior professional to provide a clear focus for clinical leadership across the Department, developing and empowering all nursing staff and students. 

Securing and assuring the highest standards of clinical care by providing leadership to nursing and trainee nursing staff.

Ensuring that administrative and support sources are designed and delivered to achieve the highest standards of care within the departments and that accurate record are maintained throughout.

Providing a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in both departments to whom patients and their families can turn for assistance, advice and support.

All general dental nursing duties and responsibilities apply when working at the chairside or elsewhere, including supervision, training and management of trainee dental nurses.

Maintain and ensuring high standards of Infection Prevention and Control procedures throughout the Care Group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Securing and assuring the highest standards of clinical care by providing leadership to nursing and support staff                                             

To contribute to the annual strategy and business plan

To co-operate to provide nursing cover across the hospital ensuring staffing levels and skill mix are based on clinical need.

To manage non staff resources in the department, ensuring value for money and appropriate and efficient usage.

To ensure staff support systems are in place liaising with Occupational Health and HR when necessary.

To be involved in the recruitment and retention of staff, and contribute to induction processes.
To carry out appraisals and performance review of all nursing staff.

To work together with the Clinical Support Managers and the Assistant Director of Nursing to ensure all staff undertake continuing clinical and professional development and comply with mandatory training requirements.

To encourage leadership and supervisory development, promoting these skills within the workplace including the development of action learning sets.

To contribute to the creation of a continuous learning environment to support all staff, both qualified and trainees.

Work with the clinical team to ensure clinical governance is an active process within the departments.

To adhere to Trust protocols, procedures, guidelines and policies for all nursing staff within the department.

To continually update your knowledge base so that nursing procedures are based on clinical need.

To be involved in disciplinary procedures as necessary with the Assistant Director of Nursing  and Clinical Support Managers, in accordance with the Trust’s disciplinary  procedures.

To support other departments within the Dental Hospital as required.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NEBDN Dental Nurse Qualification OR Equivalent GDC recognised Dental Nurse qualification
  • Educated to GCSE/O level standard or equivalent
  • Currently registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)
  • Evidence of CPD/Further study
  • Further qualifications in Sedation, Oral Health, Radiography or Orthodontic Dental Nursing

Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of the NHS as it relates to dentistry
  • Knowledge of Undergraduate and Postgraduate education within a Dental Hospital

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels and with patients
  • Evidence of good managerial skills
  • Competent Dental Nursing skills that can be demonstrated in all departments
  • Ability to plan work, motivate staff and delegate effectively

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable experience in a senior post in a hospital, community, or GDP setting
