Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced nurse to join our Breast (and Endocrine Surgery) Clinical Nurse Specialist Team as a Breast Reconstruction Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The successful candidate will join a very busy, well established and motivated team who provide an excellent service to patients who are undergoing breast reconstruction surgery following previous breast cancer surgery, as part of risk reducing pathway and benign surgery.
This post is permanent, 37.5hrs per week.
The successful candidate will have previous post registration clinical experience in the care of patients with Breast cancer. Applicants should possess excellent IT, literacy, communication and organisational skills and should be prepared to work flexibly.
Main duties of the job
As part of the Breast Specialist Nursing Team you will be supported by a dedicated team.
You will provide expert advice to patients and support them through their decision making, treatment and beyond. This will include managing a caseload and delivering the follow services across the Royal and Aintree Breast Units:
- Nurse Led Breast Prosthesis Clinic
- Nurse Led Nipple Tattoo Clinic
- Attending Joint Genetics Clinic
- Nurse led follow up clinic
- Complex wound management and review
- Management of post op complications such as seromas
You will develop skills to personalise care through undertaking Holistic Needs Assessments. You will be encouraging an approach of patient supported self-management.
You will work as part of a well-established team but will also have the ability to work autonomously.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Perform specialist personalised assessment and higher level discussion of
patient’s holistic needs
Demonstrate higher level clinical care by managing a patient caseload
providing expert assessment, planning and evaluation
Contribute towards a multi-professional approach in the management of
patients with the specialist area, especially in relation to on- going care needs and discharge arrangements, including access to community cancer support
Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and
carers/relatives
Support patients and their families and ensure that they receive the required information to enable them to self- manage, lead or participate in their care delivery.
Recognise changes in patient’s condition that requires the intervention of
others and case manage/refer on as appropriate
Support, assist and encourage the multi-disciplinary team in resolving patients problems
Deliver high standards of patient care
Work in partnership with Lead Cancer Nurse, clinicians and wider team to ensure delivery of high standards of patient care
Work collaboratively with other team members to promote development and provide training to other nurses

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First-level Registered Nurse with demonstrable experience in Breast Care
- A recognised qualification in cancer or Breast Care nursing e.g. RGN N09
- Educated to degree level or currently on a degree pathway or equivalent
- Relevant Teaching Qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Masters Study
- Counselling Certificate or relevant post registration Cancer Nursing qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post-registration experience with demonstrable experience within Breast Cancer Care
- Experience in Audit
- Multi-disciplinary team working
- Relevant Clinical Management experience
- Teaching and learning skills
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of continuing study
- An understanding of contemporary issues in the clinical care of patients with Breast Cancer
- Knowledge of research methodology
- A clear understanding of current national cancer policy and the implications for practice and the development of Breast Cancer services
- An understanding of professional nursing issues in Breast nursing and the wider nursing agenda
