Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become a Resuscitation Officer of a busy Resuscitation Department in the largest paediatric hospital in the UK.

The post holder will have experience clinical management of critically ill children and adults, with knowledge of current national resuscitation guidance and a passion for teaching the subject. Interested applicants should contact Head of Resuscitation , Sarah Barton - [email protected]

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the planning, organisation and implementation of a resuscitation training programme for all members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the Trust according to their expected degree of competence in
  • Ensure that all training is carried out in a standardised way in accordance with current evidence-based international and national resuscitation guidelines to ensure the provision of high quality patient care, using agreed teaching methods during training
  • Assess clinical skills and provide remedial training and support for those who fail to meet the required standard. Will inform the head of resuscitation services of any concerns with individual staff member’s
  • Ensure staff are aware of the Trust resuscitation policies and their application to practice.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the resuscitation training programme in response to organisational and service
  • Promote attendance at the Trust’s mandatory resuscitation training
  • Assist in the dissemination of changes in evidence-based practice relating to resuscitation care in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Advanced Life Support Group
  • Actively participate in the planning, coordinating and all administrative work associated with the provision of current and future externally accredited resuscitation courses e.g. Advanced Paediatric Life Support
  • Assist the head of resuscitation services in the provision of resuscitation training to other external agencies

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, organisation and implementation of a resuscitation training programme for all members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the Trust according to their expected degree of competence in
  • Ensure that all training is carried out in a standardised way in accordance with current evidence-based international and national resuscitation guidelines to ensure the provision of high quality patient care, using agreed teaching methods during training
  • Ensure all newly appointed medical and nursing staff and other personnel as agreed, who are likely to be on the cardiac arrest team(s), are offered training in advanced resuscitation methods, including the operation of relevant equipment

e.g. defibrillators.

  • Assess clinical skills and provide remedial training and support for those who fail to meet the required standard. Will inform the head of resuscitation services of any concerns with individual staff member’s
  • Ensure staff are aware of the Trust resuscitation policies and their application to practice.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the resuscitation training programme in response to organisational and service
  • Promote attendance at the Trust’s mandatory resuscitation training
  • Assist in the dissemination of changes in evidence-based practice relating to resuscitation care in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Advanced Life Support Group
  • Actively participate in the planning, co-ordinating and all administrative work associated with the provision of current and future externally accredited resuscitation courses e.g. Advanced Paediatric Life Support
  • When adequately trained, be prepared to direct / co-ordinate externally accredited
  • Assist the head of resuscitation services in the provision of resuscitation training to other external agencies

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Current RN / RODP / Paramedic.
  • Relevant post graduate course (Critical Care, A&E or similar).
  • Teaching qualification e.g. GIC
  • Evidence of ability to teach resuscitation and clinical skills to multi-professional groups.
  • APLS provider
Desirable criteria
  • APLS Instructor
  • ALS provider
  • Paediatric ED, Critical Care or Operating Theatre experienc

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience within an acute or critical healthcare setting.
  • Dealing with seriously ill patients and / or cardiac arrest situations.
  • Demonstrating leadership skills
  • Teaching on a formal and informal basis
  • Delivering training to multi- disciplinary teams
  • Audit experience
  • Use of IT databases

Knowledge of

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of an in-depth knowledge of contemporary resuscitation issues including the Resuscitation Council (UK and ERC) guidelines and recommendations
  • Knowledge of governance issues and NHS standards relevant to the sphere of resuscitation training and practice.
  • Evidence to demonstrate a structured approach to continuing professional development
  • Evidence of an understanding of issues affecting the NHS today, including government strategy
  • Awareness of the legal aspects of resuscitation.
