Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.
We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Job overview
We are looking to recruit a dynamic, organised, and enthusiastic nurse or AHP to join our new and innovative Mental Health Acute Liaison Team based within Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
The post holder will be required to provide guidance and support to professionals across the trust, as well as provide direct support to young people and their parents/carers admitted to Alder Hey for physical health care needs, who also have a mental health presentation.
The successfully candidate will play a crucial role in the further development of service provision and its expansion over the next 12-18 months.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for supporting the coordination of care for children and young people referred to the Mental Health Acute Liaison Team who require assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation as required. The Mental Health Practitioner will supervise and develop junior staff as well as working with the Team Leader to support ongoing service and quality developments.

Communication

- To communicate effectively and participate in clinical meetings.

Analytical skills
- To attend mandatory training, meetings and study sessions as required.

Responsibility for patient/client care
- To develop and maintain support for children and families where there is a mental health presentation/diagnosis.
- To regularly liaise with internal and external MDTs to provide consultation and plan patient care.
- To develop networks with other professional agencies and to act as a link between the ward/clinic and other agencies.
- To provide advice, support, and training around mental health presentations and management to departments and teams across the trust to improve care delivery to children and young people.
- To provide face to face support (were appropriate) to the children, young people and family to ensure access to care and treatment needs.
- To work autonomously and to be accountable for own professional judgements and actions.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records in line with Trust policies.
- To work in accordance with safeguarding children and young people policies.
- Co-operate and work effectively with other professionals in the multi-disciplinary team and community services to ensure continuity of care.
- Analyse and respond to situations arising across the trust.
- To identify and develop good practice and reflect upon own care delivery.
- To deliver public health promotion both opportunistically and planned.
- Undertake physical restraint and breakaway training and utilise in practice as appropriate and in line with least restrictive practice.
- Provide guidance of MHA requirements and least restrictive principles in care and treatment.
Responsibility for policy/service development
- To attend department meetings and in-service training as required.
- To be involved in the development of the service.
- To be involved in the development and delivery of teaching across the trust.
- To support the development on implementation of new policies and procedures.
- Flexibility in working will be required to meet the needs of this post.
- To monitor and evaluate standards of care.
- To share learning with the wider team following contact/care delivery to children, young people, and their families.
Responsibility for financial and physical resources
· Be cost effective in the use of resources.
· Work with service leads to identify potential for cost improvements.
· To be responsible for the maintenance of equipment.
· Support implementation of service by preparation of materials and administrative/resource-based tasks associated with delivery of service.
Responsibility for human resources
· The post holder will be required to manage their own caseload and escalate any concerns.
· To act as deputy in the absence of the Team Leader.
· To participate in the induction and training of new staff and pre-registration students.
· Co-operate fully with the implementation of the Trusts Health & Safety arrangements, reporting accidents / incidents to the nurse in charge / team leader, and initiating a full investigation in a timely manner, whilst taking responsibility to complete appropriate documentation.
· Accept responsibility for own professional development.
Person specification
Education & Training
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse or Allied/other health professional registered with NMC or HCPC
- Educated to first Degree level
- Evidence of appropriate continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of studying at Masters level
- Teaching qualification
- Mental Health related qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience of caring for patients with Mental Health conditions.
- Experience in behaviour management.
- Experience of managing a caseload and working autonomously
- Demonstrable staff supervisory experience
- Experience of working in a multi -disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
- Extensive experience of supporting children and their families in an acute setting.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate a commitment to optimum standard of patient care.
- Knowledge of restrictive practice
- Ability to work autonomously across MDT settings
- Knowledge of Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and its application
