An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistant to work as part of our team at The Walton Centre. You should have a keen interest in providing high quality patient centered care in a busy and fast paced, ever changing and challenging environment. Chavasse Ward is a 29 bedded Neurology Ward. We are an outstanding trust and The Walton Ways are at the forefront of everything we do. Please do not apply if you are unable to meet the required shift patterns including night shifts and bank holiday cover.
This role is a Band 2 HCA developing to a Band 3
Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd
Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and personal care
Patients toileting needs, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained
Complete fluid balance & food charts, report information to Registered nurse (RN)
Preparation/serving of patients meals, drinks & assisting feeding patients
Undertake Telemetry training and provide Telemetry cover
Movement and handling
Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development
Obtaining specimens for ward/laboratory testing
Escorting patients
Recognise & escalate changes in patients condition to RN
Initiate Basic Life Support as appropriate
Ensure due regard is given to values & spiritual beliefs
Effective communication
Clean & make bed spaces appropriately
Maintain a clean & safe environment
Stocking up supplies
Collection of Blood products
Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps
Management of abusive & aggressive behaviour
Support less experienced employees
Acknowledge limitations of knowledge & skills, complete competencies
Answer the telephone, relay messages
Basic computer skills
Retrieving charts from other areas
Report faulty equipment to estates
As necessary provide cover and undertake duties of absent colleagues & follow policies & procedures

Care Duties
• Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (to include emptying catheter bags).
• Provision of patients toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
• Support of patients in managing incontinence.
• Measures patients fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and reports information to Registered nurse
• Preparation and serving of patient’s meals, drinks and snacks. Assisting / feeding patients as necessary.
• Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Team with regard to the number of meals needed.
• Reports patients dietary intake as indicated in the patients plan of care
• Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patient’s manual handling risk assessment and care plan.
• Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
• Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the
Registered nurse in conjunction with the patient’s plan of care.
• Obtaining specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
• Escorting patients to clinical departments within the hospital
• Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
• General observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff.
• Recognise and escalate any changes in patients condition to Registered Nursing Staff.
• Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provides assist to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations.
• Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
General Duties
• Support all individuals through effective communication
• General bed making/making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions, and operation beds.
• Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare ready for use according to the ward/unit protocol.
• Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
• Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
• Assist in stocking up supplies in treatment rooms
• Collection of Blood products as required from laboratory
• Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy
• Supports members of the nursing team in the management of abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision
• Participate in orientation of less experienced employees and demonstrate own duties.
• Acknowledge limitations of knowledge and skills and complete competencies as required.
• Seek appropriate advice and support
- Support with Telemetry cover after training has been given
Administration Duties
• Undertake a range of administration duties as required in support of the Ward to ensure a smooth running service, this may involve:
• Answer the telephone and pass on messages as required.
• Basic computer skills
• Retrieving charts and other care documentation from other areas or central store in the absence of the ward clerk
• Act as messenger in the absence of other more appropriate person e.g. to other wards, laboratory, Medical Engineering etc.
• Complete maintenance repair forms and report to engineering department.
• The post holder shall as necessary provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues.
• The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation.
