Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Infectious Diseases specialist nursing team for a senior healthcare worker. The role will cover National Aspergillosis Centre (NAC) service and the Tuberculosis (TB) service. The NAC service delivers outpatient care to patients from across the UK who have a aspergillus lung related disease. The TB service delivers management and treatment in the south Manchester area and works closely with TB teams across Greater Manchester.
The senior healthcare worker role will support the specialist nursing team with delivery of a postal pack service, supporting patients and wider team in an outpatient clinic setting, data input and phoning patients to aid clinical assessments and support specialist nurses with patient home visits.
Full training will be provided to give you the skills to be able to support patients through their journey with the service. You will be a team player and happy to work independently at times, good communicator and be able to use your initiative to help the smooth running of the service.
NHS experience is essential.
Main duties of the job
Venepuncture
ECGs
phoning patients to complete questionnaires
supporting patients in clinic (for example sitting in consultations, directing and escorting patients to different departments)
providing patient information in clinic (for example verbally, written or signposting to websites)
Order stock items on Integra and NHS Supplies
Data input and maintenance of patient database
Complete postal pack requests that will include blood tests and sputum
Effectively communicate with the wider team
Use of computer systems for example: HIVE, MS programmes
Help with clinical audits, under supervision

Education/ Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 2 in a health related subject ( E.G. Health and Social Care/Diagnostics and Therapeutics) or equivalent experience in a Senior Healthcare Support Worker role
- Good general education to GCSE level or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in a health related subject ( E.G. Health and Social Care/Diagnostics and Therapeutics).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working in an acute NHS healthcare setting.
- Previous experience of support work with people with complex needs within the NHS.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy, to motivate, to enable and to be sensitive to diverse individual needs.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently on own initiative.
- Knowledge of the importance of confidentiality
- Ability to evaluate and reflect upon own performance.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within outpatient clinics
- Experience of engaging hard to reach people in healthcare.
- Experience working with persons living with infections, respiratory diseases and infectious diseases.
- Experience in supporting Quality Improvement audits and research and development activities.
- Experience of working in more than one speciality within a health care environment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Essential criteria
- Completed or willing to undertake training in basic clinical skills including physiological observations and venepuncture.
- Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and abilities.
- Effective organisational skills.
- Literate in Information Technology.
- Ability to manage and prioritise own workload and work without direct supervision.
- Experience of participating in audit.
- Experience of stock management and awareness of this important role.
Desirable criteria
- Competent in clinical skills including physiological observations and venepuncture
- Competent in other clinical skills such as recording ECG’s
- Able to act on audit findings in situ, offering support and guidance to staff (qualified and unqualified) effectively.
- Experience of teaching and sharing knowledge and skills.
- Basic infection prevention and control knowledge relevant to this role.
- Acknowledges national local guidelines
- Experience of inducting, coaching and supervising junior staff
